Hi - I've been searching online for information about 360 devkits, and this site seems like the best source of information. Hoping to get some advice -

I recently got hold of an Xbox 360 devkit. The first few times I tried to turn it on there was no picture, and the power light turned red - not the red ring of death, just a single red light in the centre. Then after a few attempts at turning it on and off, it randomly started working - the light turned green, the screen came on and I was able to access the launcher. This worked a few times consecutively, but then it stopped working again, and now I just get the red light.

Can anyone give me some advice on what might be causing this, or how I could go about trying to diagnose the issue? I'm assuming that the problem must be hardware related (because I've seen it working intermittently), and I'm hoping that there might be something simple I try to fix it.

@Marax Do you have any pictures of the XDK? It could be faulty due to so many inconceivable reasons.
If it's a 2005/6 Xenon model, its likely literally dying, but if its a stress kit or a prototype of some sort, it might just be throwing errors for its own reasons.

If this is a early "Phat" model 360, try this..
Boot the console until it Red Rings, now hold the Controller-Sync button on the faceplate, and while holding that, click the eject button 4 times.
Tell us the code the Ring of light gives you (it will flash different patterns of light each time you click eject, from 0-1-2-3)

Single red light? I'm guessing that it's a Slim Devkit? If so still do what @Stipo360 said, it applies to slims as well. I don't know anything about devkit power supplies, but if it's like a normal 360 one check the power light while you're turning it on. Could be as simple as the power supply.

When it turned on consecutively was that immediately after you had been using it?

    Thanks for the responses -

It's a 360 S XDK, manufactured in 2011 according to the info on the back. Here's a photo of it with the red light - as you can see in the background, the light on the power brick is green.

I turned it on to take this photo, and then I turned it off ready to try to steps you suggested - the moment I turned it back on though, it started working again.

Based on what I've already seen, I know this is only temporary and it will stop working again. I want to try the steps you suggested to diagnose the problem, but right now I can't get the red light to come back... I suspect if I leave it a few hours and then try again, it will be red.

In answer to the question about it turning on - yes, it seems to turn on consecutively after you have been using it for a little while. This is the second time I've got it to start turning on consistently, but it's never just started up with a green light, it's always red at least once first (last time it was red 5 or 6 attempts before it started to work).

I came back and tried again, sure enough it turned on with a red light. I tried holding the sync button and pressing eject 4 times as you said, the code I got was -

    All 4 ring lights
Just the top left ring light
    All 4 ring lights
    All 4 ring lights

I was going to test it again, but now it's turning on properly again...

lazy google says your 0100 error is a south-bridge issue due to cold joints/bad connection, a reflow seems to be the suggested fix.

You say after a few tries it starts to work so it sounds like once it heats up the connection is good and will function so yea the cold joints sounds right.

Yeah, I did some googling myself and came to the same conclusion - looks as though the issue might be fixed by purchasing and installing an X clamp.
