I've got two Xbox 360s but one of them has been playing up. I don't use it much since my other is for gaming I just use the other from time to time. Its a pretty old model from around 2006. When I put a game in it comes up with the dirty disk error or doesn't even come up with anything at all. The weird thing is if I tilt it to the side it seems to play the game fine :/ Any ideas on a fix for this? Thanks
If your not against voiding your warranty you could try taking it apart and cleaning the inside of the system and the drive laser really good, or just run it on its side. Im pretty sure, short of swapping the drive for a new one, those are about your only options.
you can clear the cache of your harddrive. with many titles that get dirty disc errors, its not always the lasers... try clearing the cache of the harddrive and give it another go.
I'm having a similar problem with mine although no dirty disk message just doesn't register the game at all. I'm still working up the courage to open it though as i have no experiance with electronics. If i open and close the tray loads of times it sometimes eventualy finds the game but i think my patiance will go before the xbox's, I'm thinking of buying some polyfiller soon incase i end up with an Xbox shaped hole in my wall :banghead:. How do i clear the cache?
dude, it's easy! 1: copy your drive serial number! 2: buy a shitty drive for 30 bucks on ebay! 3: write that shit on it 4: connect the wires AY!
I got my xbox from a friend for free, but it was kicked down a flight of stairs. I bought a replacement DVD drive off ebay for $35, but watch out because it won't work with the new serial number. Just swap the old PCB into the new drive mechanism. Works great now. Only do this if you have no more warranty (you probably don't)
Put in the oven, 240˚C for 10 minutes. Fixes alot of 360 problems, usually not disc drive problems but lets face it, in a few months that 360 is going to be screwed anyway. Don't believe me google it.
That isn't a good idea (as is the towel trick). The main problems I've heard about focus around the CPU and the GPU, so that's where you need to concentrate on. The popular "quick" fixes that involve heating up the entire console can potentially adversely affect other components that are working correctly. Instead, open up the console so air can get to the unaffected components, and let either the CPU / GPU (depending on the problem (3 rings / E74, etc) warm up by themselves. Reapplying thermal compound and replacing the x-clamps with the bolts / plastic and metal washer kits is also recommended for the long-term. For the DVD issue, the 360 works in two positions: horizontally and vertically. If you gently rotate the console between these two positions, you should hear something moving inside. This is the device that determines if the unit is in the correct orientation (to prevent you from opening the DVD drive upside-down or at an angle that would cause the disc to fall out, I suppose). It's possible that the switch isn't functioning correctly since you can play it in certain positions and not others. If you don't hear any movement, give your console a tap or two to try and dislodge it if it's stuck.
I had the same problem with my old 360. I read somewhere to replace the magnet in the DVD drive. So I took one out of an old cd-rom drive and replaced it and sure as can be it worked perfectly. I don't know why it worked but it did. Never hurts to try as the warranty is gone by now.
Well as the warranty was up i decided to take the sucker apart and see what could be done. Being a complete novice at this i really wasn't expecting much (last console i opened up was my NES about 15 years ago). so once its open i turned the DVD pot a few mm and connected the drive back up. Lo and behold it worked first time:dance: , after testing a few different discs i put the case back on in a bit of a hurry forgeting the DVD drive button:110: another 5 mins and i was all fixed up and ready to go  Moral of the story: If the warranty is up give it a bash, Even if you're a complete novice like me. There's loads of guides on the internet and even if it doesn't work where does it leave you? Back at square one with a broken Xbox, so whats to lose?
