Xbox 360 displaying a million polygons.

Discussion in 'General Gaming' started by Topic Archive, Aug 6, 2005.

  1. Here's an 360 Dev Kit running a demo for ATI at the Siggraph 2005 show.

The guy running the demo explained that the graphic's part is much more powerful than even the upcoming R5XX, series and that ATI's desktop unit will match Xbox 360 graphics with a next generation scheduled for next year.

The Rubi model (running at 720P resolution) was rendered with 70,000 polygons while some of its elements had as many as 120,000 polygons per character.

The most demanding scene had the dreamlike number of one million polygons per scene.

While we probably won't see anything near that in the scope of an actual game, the potential is rather tantalizing! :)

no more fog, or super modeled characters with fog, that is the question.

Either way, it's still great. :)

Impressive, although it would be nice to see it with both a polygon model and a textured model for comparison.

Do you think the external PSU is under the green base? Seriously why else would that be there?

Thats pretty cool. But I think does it have all the graphical effects on too? Like a normal game would?

I was a semi-serious question! The base looks out of place; like it's hiding something.....

ET: Is the power supply integral to the box? Or do you have a separate power supply in-line on the power cord?
TH: Some of the power delivery mechanism is internal to the box, but there is also an external power supply that delivers DC voltage to the box.

    70,000-120,000 per character? o_O

I was sure this next gen would bring at least 20,000-40,000 poly characters, but upwords of 120,000 even in the final generation of games sounds just too insane to be true. And in the event that it really can push that, or even close, I don't believe for a second it'll be able to pull it off with dynamic lighting, cloth physics, or anything else thats particularly processor intensive.

Too bad their not embracing homebrew in some way this comming generation, as their the only company I can see maybe trying that some day. Although I do understand the various difficulties in doing so (particularly from a legal standpoint), i'd still like to see it happen.
