but does the official one still work after the XBL update? Since the 'all spread over the web version' isnt bootable anymore!

No reason the official one wouldn't.

After all it is pressed on proper media. It'll pass any checks asked of the console. One burned on a DVD+/-R disc will fail the media check.

It's rather trivial coding to block a disc like this. Dashboard simply looks at the XEX and sees it on a watch list. Watch list says "only run from official media, ignore media flag on XEX." Net result? Copy fails.

That said, I wish a certain hacker out there would get to coding a firmware patch for the debug system. Sure would be nice to play retail and debug discs on the same console... :)

Just an update: I almost got a spindle of those buggers, but microsoft ordered them destroyed. I only have one now.

One of the protections built in to the 360 gives it the ability to block the media flags of just one certain disc. Basicly from what i've heard, if there is ever a 007/mech assault/splinter cell style hack found, microsoft has the ability to block all of the discs from that stamping. They plan on calling the discs defective and issuing a recall with a new stamping. Anyone with the "defective" disc will be able to send it to microsoft for the new one. Softmodding in the same manner of hack as the Xbox 1 will be very dificult. Microsoft learned a lot from xbox-scene.

As for retail on the debug... didn't the hack_devkit not come out until 2003?

The Hack_Devkit BFM was by no means the first way to get retail code boot on a debug Xbox. ;)

I know you could resign the xbe using dexbe, and that came out in 2002. I still have never gotten that to work tho. The first workaround i was aware of was to decompile the xbe into assembly using xbox watson then recompile it as debug with the sdk... i think i heard about that in early 2002? not sure...
