Finally....I managed to get it all set up. I downloaded WMP 11 with the Media Connect function and got it hooked up with my XBOX 360. I have about 5,000 songs on my PC and now I can stream them to my 360. My 360 has an optical out which connects with my 5.1 surround sound stereo. You use your TV to make playlists and select tracks. It will also stream pictures and video, but it looks like the only video it will play are WMV files, of which I have very few. I'm trying to find a converter where I can just insert a DVD and have it ripped into WMV then I'll be set. I can copy my entire DVD collection to an external drive and turn on the TV and choose the one I want to watch like a video jukebox. Anyway, is anyone else using this?
a generic mpeg4 codec that would do avi files at least, would be preferable to the wmv support. Most people's wmv files are usualy porn from what I've seen.
Not going to happen for $$$ reasons. Microsoft owns the rights to WMV and can include support royalty free. Other formats would require patent royalties to be paid. This is also the reason why you'll see MPEG-2 playback when done via the Media Center Extender but not via a local hard drive playback. That said, you can get a Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft for free. Woo. -hl718
