So I have two Phat Xbox 360's (Xenon, Japser) that are pretty much having the same problem. They turn on but display no video and don't red ring. While on one of them randomly ejects the disc drive as well. I've reflowed the CPU, GPU, HANA, SB and RAM chips on both 360's with no change. I've used different known good PSU's and component cables with no change. With those out of the way I'm not sure what exactly to look for. Since they get power and "turn on" there's not really a problem there. None of the caps look bad on either of them and I don't see any other damaged components or traces. Any ideas? Disclaimer: I understand that reballing is the legit 1337 preferred certified MLG repair method for these kind of things and that reflowing is for filthy uncivilized peasants, but I do not own a reball station nor the stencils needed. But I have had a 99% success rate with reflowing and none of the consoles I've fixed have RROD'd so far in the past 5 years.
If the component cables are official ones I would not be suspect to them not working especially if they work in other consoles, however I have had odd things happen with various aftermarket ones, the cheap ebay ones with a HD/SD switch do weird things, I have had them work fine in HD but not SD, the switch labeling has been backwards, work in one console but not another, etc, etc. So if you have one of these or a multi console-in-one type I would not put it past the cable to work on every console but one or 2 for some unknown reason. On a side note I have one specific HDMI cable that for no logical reason, absolutely will not work with any of my 360's!! Oddly enough it's an expensive brand name cable, yet I have no problem with any of my $2-4 "cheap" HDMI cables LOL Aside of that I would be suspect to the HANA on the xenon, I've have a few xenons boot with no video before, I have also had xenons do some weird thing where it's like it can't decide if it wants to RROD or not and just sits there, but this does not produce any ROL indication of boot (which I assume you are getting on both of these) , they just sit with a solid green center forever. The jasper I would say GPU, however I have had little experience with jasper errors, these and falcons tend to come to me with no power up ,due to blown mosfet(s).
NOPE The 360 uses "flip chip" package design, the issue is to do with the connection between the Die and PCB substrate of the processor package. No fix for this, unless you've thrown the xbox at a wall and cracked the BGA a reball won't do anything, waste of money... Long story short, you can "fix" them by warming them up (not even hot enough to activate flux) but they will fail again... Start basic, check for obvious signs of physical damage (blown caps, missing components, shorts ect). Check voltages to processors, do they even get hot? Whats the history of the machines? Have they had their NAND messed with? Tried booting without the DVD drive, very long shot. Using a shotgun approach to troubleshoot may cause more problems..
The cable's I have are official, I tried the Phat 360 component cable with the HD switch and I also tried the Slim composite cable, both of which work with all my other 360's just fine. I could re-reflow the HANA and GPU but I figure I'll look around at other things first. They don't actually get the ROL they just have the solid green light in the center. Well LeHam thank-you for the clarification and mythbusting! I've long thought that reballing was a bit overkill with the success I've had reflowing, but most information I've come across has disagreed with that notion. The processors do indeed get hot if I let them run for a minute. The Xenon has a fan mod (bypasses fan control with a wire) I did several moons ago so I could undo that but I severely doubt that would be the issue with that one. I'll compare it with another Xenon I have to see if I accidentally blew off some components during the reflow. I've read about other people have success booting without the DVD drive so I'll try that too. I did just realize that the Jasper I have died when I was trying to R-JTAG it. So maybe I forgot to flash the NAND back to stock? If that's the case I'll feel a bit silly.
So the Jasper turned out to have a bad DVD drive so I swapped it out for another one and now it works fine. The Xenon however still doesn't work and I might leave it at that. Over a period of a week the Xenon went from totally normal caps to all of them bulging to some of them even bursting. I've never seen that happen so fast. So besides having to replace all the caps I imagine that there's something else going on that I'd have to figure out. So I'm going to put that on the back burner for now.
