Ok I "acquired" this 360 years ago. Infact I believe its about a year after production and since I've had the console its had major issues reading disks. I completely forgot about it till recently. And I was hoping it might be a simple fix? Well maybe not since I reckon the drive was faulty to begin with but I thought I'd ask some experts here if its worth saving or not.

I had a similar issue with my Xbox 360 that I bought in Kyrgyzstan, it would not read disks until the drive was cycled anywhere from 3-20 times, read cds just fine however. I called MS about it, and they wanted to charge me $110 to fix it (as it was out of warranty by the time I got back to the states). It oddly would work just fine with older games (i.e Oblivion, Viva Pinata), but had issues with the newer games (RE5, GOW). Never figured out a fix, ended up gifting it to a friend of mine who was aware of the issue, and bought a new one.

Strangely it seemed to play dvds and cds perfectly fine just games from what I remember. I'm gonna have to dig it out later today and give it another test.

Good idea thanks. I just did some research and it turns out some of the earlier units were't calibrated correctly. Problem being though I can't find the power brick and if I remember I lent it to my friend. Providing he still has it. If not any places cheap in the UK I could acquire one from?

I have two 360s with the same problem the say loading and then go back to saying open tray i got a disk drive off a freind whose 360 red ringed and i swapped it over in one of them but it when it finally did read the disk after about 10 tries it started the intro then froze up. when my second 360 had the same issue i just sat down to play and it wouldnt load so i opened and closed the disk tray for litterally 15 minutes(It was a combination of anger and bordem) it started working and i got about three months out of it but i needed money so i got a loan on it it was there for three months i finally got it back had a great night of 360 then when i awoke and attempted to play a game it refused to load i tried my previous fix in out in out for about 20 mins then gave up.
let me know if the tuning thing works.

i came across this issue with a friend of mine. he was a smoker and upon further investigation found that there was a thin layer of film over the dvd lens. i took a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol, gave it a quick wipe, let it dry, put it back together and it works like the day it wa spurshesd.

    it works . get adventerous!

Finally got round to trying this. I got mixed results with the pot method. I got some games to work and others didn't I did the same method I read in a guide which was like the one I did on my old Dreamcast. I guess its curtains for the 360 and I should just get a second hand one from somewhere?

Or just buy a new DVD Drive apprx 35-60. off eBay or via Jungleflasher site sponsor links and flash it with the keys off that DVD Drive and be done.

For another 20 pounds I could get a second hand xbox with one of those new motherboards so I think I'm going to do that. My mate who works at a game store is gonna put me one with a benq drive which is meant to be the best aside.

The dashboard on my current system is really old though I wonder if its worth anything its the one with the blades version from 2007

Nice! If it's got the 7371 or lower version dashboard on it then it's possibility good for the JTAG exploit

I believe its the 2.0.5759.0 dashboard which I guess is good for JTAG then? How much do you think it would be worth? Everythings fine minus the disk drive

Wow sweet, it all actually depends on the model of the board in that unit, is it a zephyr or xenon or falcon, I'd think if it's a falcon it'd go for like 300-350 jtagged already around here, and less for the other models like 150-250. for the Xenon & Zephyr tho for the Jasper model prob see like 400-450. But these prices are for around here, not sure what it'll go for around your area.

I'd just go on and get the unit jtagged which can be done for just $25. plus return shipping then you wouldn't even need the DVD Drive at all with the ability to ftp over your games onto the hdd once jtagged, and enjoy much more other features unless your wantin to go for a legit untouche'd unit for LIVE access. Then I'm sure someone would be more than happy to trade a Elite with all hookups and a 120GB HDD for your jtagable unit. You could try doing that off the X-S BST Threads or yeah of course here :)
