After about 5 minutes of playing GTA IV, my UK Xbox 360 (cheap version with additional 20GB HDD) resets to the dashboard. Can't figure out what's wrong. No disc read error - or any errors for that matter. The xbox live menu flashes up really quickly twice then I am put back to the desktop. I can play the original Xbox (non360) games all day, no problems.
Silly question, but is your Xbox 360 modded? And is your copy of GTA IV an original or a backup? -hl718
Then, if you have the hard drive space, try this: Dump GTA IV to the HD and try running it from there. See if it still crashes. If it does not crash: you have a potential issue with the disc itself or, secondarily, the reader. If it does crash: you are potentially looking at early stage symptoms of RRoD. -hl718
If you've been playing from HD, flip it around. Play from disc and see if the same thing happens at the same spot. This will allow you to eliminate the possibility of a bad sector on the HD. You can also try clearing the HD cache, just in case there is a corrupt file on there. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971755/ When you clear the cache you will delete all temp files created by games as well as any title updates. This will not clear any save games or DLC. If the game still freezes when run from disc and when run from the hard drive after clearing the cache, it is another vote for a core hardware issue. If the game works from disc/HD after cache clearing, there is the possibility that you got a random corrupt file or that there might have been a bad sector on the hard drive. -hl718
I cleared the caché and deleted my game image - everything seems to be working great now! So, is there something I can do to identify/repair bad sectors? Anything else I can do? I really appreciate your help hl718, I just got the system and I have no clue about it. Thanks to your advice, I can continue with a nights gaming Tony
