Alright so i've been doing a shit load of research on the Xbox 360 Slim's "perfected" Overheating Smart Monitoring or whatever you wanna call it. I noticed that the Prototype Slim Devs have a small difference from the Retail Final Slims. And yes, I tested this by placing a cutip in my fan so it won't spin. :encouragement:

When a Prototype Slim overheats, it proceeds to give you the warning message that your console is overheating and will shut down until the system has reached safe temperatures for the mobo to operate on. It also tells you that the red dot that is currently flashing indicating a problem with your console, will STOP flashing once the system is ready to be used again. And of course at this point the screen goes black, and most parts of the motherboard shut off, thus the system begins to cool. At this point I remove the cutip and of course the fans go nuts for all of about 10 seconds, and then stops. Now once the fans stop, the red dot continues to flash. Now, during that emergency shut down, the Xbox 360 Slim's fans are designed and coded to stop spinning once the system is ready to be used again. However the red dot on the power module continues to flash after the fans have stopped spinning. The Prototype Slim never stops flashing red until you turn the console off.

When a Retail Final Slim overheats, all of the above happens exactly the same EXCEPT one thing. It actually does what it was supposed to do unlike the Prototype. The flashing red dot stops flashing at exactly the same time the fans stop spinning, which results in the console turning completely off, and waiting for you to turn it back on.

Now most of you are probably saying? "Wtf? Why would you want to do something like this to your Slim anyways? And of course duh it's going to be different or in a sense, "incomplete" on a Prototype Slim BECAUSE IT'S A PROTOTYPE!" >.<

Yeah yeah I know, it's just simply that I have taken an interest in wanting to figure out exactly what in the hell is controlling this Emergency Shut Off, and more importantly, if a Prototype Slim can be modified (upgraded if you will) to doing the same as the Retail Final Slim.

Immediately the first thing I thought was responsible is the SMC. But after some research, (correct me if i'm wrong) I have concluded that it IS NOT the SMC that manages and controls this Emergency Shutdown.

    Anybody have a clue? :confused-new:

.... i dont see this as a problem just keep it cool and it wont red dot anyway. although you could try injecting a final SMC but its morelikely to be hardware level

Yeah but it would have to be a Dev SMC right? As far as I know there are no final SlimDevs out there, which results in no final SMC. I don't think you can use a Retail final SMC? Different offsets and such?

Leon had a look comparing both a final and a proto SMC to try and mod the code and he said the code is exactly the same. O__O

Aside from the configuration, are the Slim Prototypes generally OK for overheating (hardware-wise)?

Well really you should never overheat a console. (Lol) But it's very safe on Slims. They are coded to emergency shut off at 89C. The dangerous boiling point for thermal paste or solder points is 100C. So yeah you're fine.

Could you not just change that to 80 degrees C or so?

    Yeah you could. =D

My problem is, what can I change in the proto config to make the red flashing dot stop flashing when the fans stop spinning from cooling the system off, thus shutting the entire console down? On retail finals the red dot stops flashing, on protos it does not.

I tried editing my SMC config and reflashing the image in Flash360 on my Slim Proto once. Didn't work out properly. Console booted and there didn't seem to be any difference to the fan noise (despite a 20 degree C drop), but after running a recovery (to test), the console's fans ran at 100% for some weird reason. Anyway reflash orig and it works fine again.
