Hi folks, my kids 360 suddenly stopped reading disks of any kind . I put it down to a failing laser and popped on eBay to order a couple of new ones. Replaced the laser ( de soldered the anti static solder blob beforehand ) and it still didn't work. Tried the second one and that too failed to read anything. I then gave up with that drive and ordered a new , exact replacement. Its a lite-on DG16D4S. Now when that arrived I removed the logic board out of my broken unit and installed it into the new unit. tested it and that wont read anything either so I have narrowed it down to the logic board failing as I installed the new logic board in my old drive and that will read DVD's fine, obviously wont play games due to incorrect key. So my question is are there any common problems with the logic board on the particular drive?? I have never in my time repairing games consoles had a logic board fail, 99% of the time its been a laser issue. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated as my kid has commandeered my 360 and I'm not allowed to play.

    Cheers

Your post got auto-moderated - apparently you should have received a message when you posted it saying it went to the moderation queue. This will probably happen with your next few posts now. If it does and your posts don't immediately appear, be patient - don't repost them! A moderator will get around to approving them eventually.

Could be the pickup controller (pretty common on ps3's) the ic tends to get hot which is why the fail IMHO ..
no need to buy one if you have a spare drive board. You will need a SMD rework station to swap IC's properly

i don't think there are any fuses on the 16DS but check that too..

a quick test to be 100% on the drive Pcb is to get the replacement drive and Pcb (the one that does not match your consoles dvd key) and pop it in the console and try to play a dvd movie (it should work even if the keys don't match)

    hope this helps

@Leham: he said he tried to play a DVD with another board and it worked
so yeah basically if I was i would try to first read the key from the original board and flash the new one with it
if the board cannot be recognized on JungleFlasher you most likely will have to extract it from the mobo via RGH hack
if you do that you'll need a LTU2 PCB tho
because the DVD-key itself isn't sufficient on Slims, you need to use the LTU2 firmware that can recreate a firmware from NAND dump
note that you can use the LTU2 fw on Phat Liteon Drives

OK ,thanks the replies. unfortunately flashing is out for me as my CK3 has had is day and no longer works. I'll have a crack at removing the controller IC. I'm guessing that is the one that has the small thermal pad stuck to it and is labelled as an R2A3 0231 SP? The only other IC is the Mediatek which holds the firmware so I suppose I have just confirmed that .

Yup the controller ic is used the most and this produces a lot of heat :)
use some flux and a hot air station if you have one. Remove the ic off the new (non paired) Pcb first

but you can find this part in 99% of dvd drives

edit: also while you have the drive open check the limit switch that checks the tray status, it's around the LOAD motor up the front
