Xbox controller or port?

So Ive been tinkering with my original xbox a lot lately, when I plugged it in and started using it all seemed well but lately my controller seems to be acting up. It seems to me that it's acting like the left analog stick is being held in the up position because it keeps scrolling upwards on thing like the hexen menu.....I felt it was possible that maybe the controller was starting to go bad on me even tho it has been working g fine over the past few weeks so I switched to a different controller all seemed well for a little while until the second controller started doing the exact same thing. So now I'm questioning the system and controller ports at this point but I'm not certain exactly how to narrow down the issue. Here are the specifics on this particular xbox maybe someone can point t me in a clear direction of what might be causing the issue.

Xbox v. 1.0 with daughter board
Chipped with an xecuter 2.3 B+ solderless
The clock capacitor has NOT been removed
Both controller tested were official MS original xbox controllers

If any one can point me in a direction to look or how to solve this problem perhaps I would greatly appreciate it because I don't know what to do short of either switching out the controller daughter board and/or controller ports with spares I have lying around

Soo it appears on 1 controller that is something to do with the left trigger as I have tried it on 2 systems with the same symptoms of it scrolling upwards when I launch sids 4, but this still has me wondering how is it possible to have the same issue on 2 controllers?

The controllers are crap, check the wire for damage at the strain relief on the controller end. Also the potentiometers in the analog sticks wear out, usually wandering up or right is the first sign of that. Also possible is a cracked board due to gamer rage
Edit: the controller ports are similar to USB, the cable is probably not the problem
Edit 2: when the sticks go bad they usually wander in the most used direction usually up or right on the left stick. Usually you walk forward in most 3d games or right in a side scroller.

This is the case — original Xbox controllers are USB 1.1 devices with custom plugs. If the controller is detected and functions at all then any problems you’re having are not with the cable, strain relief, plug, or console ports, as damage to them that’d affect the controller would prevent the controller from even being properly detected.

Obvious suggestion is obvious: Try cleaning your controllers internals once in a while. Just open 'em up and go to town w/ cotton swabs and a good amount of alcohol. May not work all of the time, but does surprisingly often.
Look for wear and tear while you're already in there.

I almost never use a used controller without cleaning it first with soap and water. But be a little careful when you take it apart if you’re not used to things with small parts — almost everything except the circuit board and screws is just plastic and can be washed with soap and water, but there are a lot of little parts, and you’ll be rather unhappy if you put it together wrong. Also, I don’t know the exact layout of the controller as I haven’t opened an original Xbox controller, but be careful with the triggers and don’t wash the metal spring. It’s simple as hell either way, but have to pay close attention.
