XBOX Dakota Controller -- PIC ADDED

    Hi all,

I have an Xbox Dakota controller I'm looking to sell.
What is this? It looks like the standard Duke controller that we all know, with the following differences:

    1. Green metallic center Jewel with the raised-looking "XBOX" text logo
    2. Black controller casing is lighter than a stock Duke controller...somewhat gray even
    3. Braided cable is a lighter gray color
    4. labels on back read: "Made in Malaysia - Dakota" -- Serial # 000022021

This is in great shape, even has the protective film sticker over the jewel.
I don't really know the full story on these, but I believe Microsoft originally intended to use these as pack-in controllers, but switched to the Duke design (with crappier black jewel design) at the last minute. I believe these Dakotas may have been included with dev kits or perhaps very few of the launch systems, though I was a first-in-line guy back in November 2001 and my launch Xbox did not come with a Dakota controller.
Personally, I love the design...the green jewel truly makes the difference.

One thing to keep in mind...I've tested various Dakota controllers on different systems. They generally work fine, though I did have intermittent "Please connect controller" errors on my Halo special edition Xbox console, while my launch day unit had zero issues. Please keep this in mind if you consider buying.

Price - $30.00 shipped for buyers in the lower 48 states. Intl, shipping costs will need to be factored in.
    PAYPAL preferred.

I love the Duke with a passion, anyway I could see a picture of this? Never heard of the Dakota model before. Very tempting...

I've got a dakota too- found mine at gamestop back when the xbox had just come out, also with protective film in place still-the jewel is definitely nice as compared the the little printed one.... I'm rather interested in a second one, any chance i can get a photo of the actual unit as well?

I've looked for years and I never see them around these parts anymore. Maybe it's a regional thing.

I've wondered the same thing about stuff like... NES games with fami adapters in them, and stuff like that. Closest thing I've ever seen is a Japanese S-controller, but it was very very well used and also quite disgusting. I'm even a self-claimed preowned controller connoisseur who checks out the selection at every visit.

Just to clarify, I believe the Dakotas were sent out with the Alpha 2 and Development units. The controller graphic on the dashboard from Alpha 2 series showed a Dakota. It was lighter plastic with the green Xbox logo in the middle. Prior to that there was a prototype Xbox controller that I sadly never quite managed to obtain.

I have a feeling they were issued up until the first Debug kits were sent out and then the controller changed to the standard Duke controller.

    Sorta correct...

The 'Dakota' was intended to be used as 'the' final Xbox controller, but in practice was used as a dev tool, to try and get the pad speed's up to final spec.

None were ever 'officially' sent out with Alpha kit's, as there was no need, development was going at such a pace that Alpha went to Beta before the final 'style' of gamepads really left internal dev.

The Alpha SDK clearly show's what a final style pad would look like, they made no secrets, it was just easier/safer to stick with the 'pure' USB Hammerhead for the short timescale in question.

...In summary, basically the Dakota's went out with final internals and were shipped with regular 'early/random' retail/dev kits until supplies dried up. Basically a logistic supply anomaly, between several different part's manufactures if you will.

Oddly, I had coworkers back in 2001 swear that their launch unit Xbox console came with the Dakota controller packed in (mine never did though). I doubted the story myself, but given the fact that these seemed to show up regularly at my local game store's used section I though these claims may have been somewhat valid.

But yeah...anyone need one for their collection? It's still available! :D
