The DVD drive in my Xbox keeps opening up. It will stay shut if I start a DVD, and the drive itself is working fine. The tray just keeps coming out for fresh air. I read somewhere that a magnet may have come loose. If this is the case I should just be able to open the drive up and secure the magnet, right? I'd really rather not have to buy another DVD drive.
I have a similar problem with my old Pioneer DVD. The difference is that it keeps closing. When i press open, instead of stopping so i can put / remove disc, it closes
When you say Xbox, are you talking about the 360? There were some problems reported with (Hitachi) drives where the spindle magnets were getting stuck to the top of the drive. Is it something like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSX2l4HhFRs
So i guess it's not that uncommon problem. This is the DVD i have: http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/hardwarereviews/pioneer535/pioneer535.asp I think i got it on 1999 or 2000 (can't remember really).
Whoops, kinda forgot about this thread. Classes starting and such. Anyhoo... Nah, regular Xbox. It seems to be similar to the problem in the video, but my drive has been working fine for years and just now started doing this. It will stay closed about 50% of the time, and the other half it's opening whenever it wants.
You could check the spindle magnet is OK, but it shouldn't be able to fall out on the Xbox - not without removing the sticker and that huge circle! If it wasn't ejecting, it would be the belt. Not much help to you. Could be that it has slipped a notch on the gear. It's trying to open for a precise time, but it meets resistance before it gets to the end of this time and as a security measure, retracts. If you're careful, you can fix such problems by forcing the drawer in a notch, although I'd recommend opening it and doing a good job.
I would take it to a local game store to see if they can repair your problem, if not your only solution is to open it up, remove the top casing, take out the disk trey remove the top of the disk trey and run the xbox with the top off, try ejecting and then closing it then. If it closes fine and doesn't eject on its own like its been doing, then piece it back together, I had a similar problem to this when I first disassembled my xbox for disk hot swapping for modification research I later took it apart and put it back together and it seemed to have fixed my problem, if it doesn't fix yours, then I would keep it shut and for now on run your xbox the ghetto way, push the magnet out of the disk trey metal casing and use it to hold down the disk and just swap disks (only when xbox is off) with the disk trey case top off and place the magnet on top of the disk and boot as such. This may not fix your problem but it will certainly work around your problem if your not looking to dish out the doe for a new disk trey. Good luck!
The only local game stores around here are Gamestops, and they wouldn't touch my Xbox (softmodded and painted). I wouldn't trust them with it, anyway. It's actually quit spitting the DVD tray out lately, so I'm not really concerned about it anymore. Once I have my fileserver up and running I won't need to use the DVD drive again, so I might just unplug it if it starts acting up.
Umm, are you saying run the drive with the top off the whole drive?! I would not recommend that! The spindle magnet is in the top - without it, you won't get a disc to stay in! If you want a CD hitting you in the face, be my guest! That said, it'll probably fail to spin up altogether. I have a funny feeling the console goes mad if you remove the drive totally. I can't remember, though - it's been a long time since I've had to work on one!
Yeah, it has a softmod, so it might not fly. I know you can switch a BIOS flag for the DVD check if you're using a modchip, but that's in my other Xbox, not this one. However, my other Xbox's drive works fine, so I might just swap it out and flip the BIOS flag for the DVD check. I have to reflash it one of these days, anyway. Either way it should be fine.
