    Hey Gang,

Ive been an original xbox owner since xmas of 2001. I am on my 3rd unit and still going strong. I love the original xbox. Its just excellent.

Im having some relationship issues though. So ive come to the internet in search of help!

I recently obtained a Sony Wega kd-34xbr960. Im sure everyone here knows what that is but just in case it is a 34 inch widescreen CRT that can put out a 480p, 720p, 1080i signal. It was meant to compliment my xbox so i could finally play all my beloved games in widescreen and hd!

I have the original microsoft brand component xbox cables.

The issue is that not even half of my titles that are supposedly widescreen friendly will display in widescreen (according to this link on wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_with_HD_support )

on the xbox dashboard i have it set to widescreen. I have it set to 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

On the tv i just have the video setting to normal, aka it just outputs whatever signal it gets. (i think)

    Freedom fighters
    Xmen legends
    xmen legends 2
    Hulk ultimate destruction
    and dragons lair 3d

all of these games pop into widescreen mode upon sticking in the game CD. They all look amaaaaazing, and when i press the display button on my TV it shows that they are displaying in 16:9 720p, and for dragons lair it even shows its displaying at 16:9 1080i (really cool!!)

Grand theft auto 3, vice city, and san andreas
    toejam and earl 3
    the suffering ties that bind
    conker reloaded
    advent rising
    max panye 2
    doom 3
    Halo 2

Are all games that the wiki link claims will play in widescreen. But they refuse to display in widescreen on my TV. I have tried going into my TV settings and clicking the Full, or Wide zoom options under the screen mode but all they do is stretch out the image and make it look fat. They look better in 4:3 than just stretching them out to fit the screen

Does anyone have an idea whats going on? 5 of my games look glorious and will display with no issues in widescreen yet nothing else will???

is the wiki link lying? do my second list of titles indeed NOT display in widescreen??? I could have sworn that Halo 2 supported widescreen!

thanks so much guys, I really hope to hear from any of you if you get a spare second to post in the next few days

On the game covers on the back it mentions if they support widescreen. Usually on my TV it's on 'Just scan' then stretches to 16:9 (I'm fine with this).

I can verify those titles for you though bud.

Okay I guess im just genuinely surprised. The wiki link says that a ton of games display in 16:9 so i just assumed it was correct.

It seems hard to believe that such awesome titles as Halo 2 and the three GTA3 games do not display in widescreen, yaknow?

And actually only one of those titles that i own actually say on the back of the game box that they display in widescreen, and thats Dragons Lair.

Maybe xbox games that say they display 720p are the only ones that will display in widescreen???

    Im really disappointed!

Maybe you have a softmod or something that is changing the widescreen setting apart from MS dash?

Actually, it sounds like some your TV isn't showing widescreen modes for 480p?

    This too:

I don't know about your specific Sony CRT, but the one I have at home you can manually set it to 16:9. So try and see if you can do that. I believe it's on the Menu. Don't go to zoom mode.

Every game on my xbox displays in widescreen on my TV, I have p.size set to 16:9 rather than wide zoom. Also I'm sure I read somewhere that every Xbox game is required to have Widescreen support during actual gameplay by Microsoft & if you have a modded console, you might need to enable widescreen mode in the menu of your modded dash. More likely, it could be that your TV is set to use 4:3 for 480p if only 720p displays widescreen.

hey guys thanks so much for the input. Ive been farting around with this on and off for days now. this absolutely blows my mind.

I finally had to disconnect everything and drag my xbox over to the panasonic VT60 just to see if it was the xbox. Its not. Every game i pop in will immediately display in perfect 16:9. images are not fat and distorted, they look perfect.

I for the life of me can NOT figure out why my CRT TV will not load games into widescreen. I mean the xbox turns on and the dashboard pops up naturally into 16:9 480i widescreen. I click the display button on the TV and it says its displaying a 16:9 480i image and if i stick in one of those 720 games it will pop into widescreen and say its displaying a 16:9 720p image. No problem

soon as i pop in anything else though BOOM it reverts to 4:3 480p

My TV can definitely display a 480p 16:9 image though! thats whats crazy. I plugged my PS3 with component cable inputs into the same location as the xboxs, and told the PS3 via the Video Output Settings to display only a 480p 16:9 image and it will spit it out no problem and play any ps3 game i stick in there in widescreen. TV display says its displaying a 480p 16:9 image

im absolutely flabbergasted. I even have the original user manual from 2005 for this kd-34xbr960......little good its doing.

I guess I could attempt a factory reset on the TV. Maybe something in the service menu got twerked at some point.

    ARGH!

It's probably conflicting with composite input. It's a bit weird, XBOX video modes are picky it seems.

    http://www.avsforum.com/forum/141-xbox-area/602046-xbox-games-not-showing-up-16-9-a.html

i did more forum searching and this poor soul back in 2005 that is also a sony CRT owner is describing the EXACTE same problem as i.

I tried his suggestion and turned off 480p on the xbox dashboard, and what do you know....All of these titles will display in perfect non-stretch 480i 16:9!!! but just like him, as soon as you turn that 480P option on, you no longer get a true 16:9 quality picture. And no options on the TVs menu guide will get it to look non stretched

The people replying on his thread seem to understand his problem, and offer him a solution, but like him I am unable to swing it so that i can have both 480p AND a true 16:9 non-stretched image.

Its either 480i and 16:9 or 480p and 4:3 mode.

Does this make sense to anyone else??????

That's very weird. I don't get that issue at all, it must depend on the the TV you have, not all are the same sadly. Like the Samsung SmartTVs they butcher output sometimes.

    I have a Samsung Smart TV & all my games display in perfect 16:9 in 720p, 480p & 480i.

Although I have experienced an odd glitch twice before in 480p mode which made the image stretch off the screen.

I should've mentioned below 480i. Just ruins it on my mate's Samsung SmartTV. They are rubbish for anything not HD.
