I haven't had / used an xbox in over a year, and what do I see on my credit card bill this week? XBOX LIVE $49.99. It seems they changed the terms of use since I had xbox live a year ago and added an "auto renew" to it. It took me 20 minutes on the phone to india to get the refund, this is after they tried to have me give it to someone in my family, upgrade to 360 live, etc. I dislike MS reaching into my pc as much as they do, but into my pocket is another matter all together!
That's the bad thing with consumer, standard-form contracts. You can't doge them, and the stronger bargaining power is always the corporation. Usualy courts are sympathetic in such cases, if push comes to shove. I m happy you bothered calling to india however, many people would say "oh well", and MS would have made another easy buck. Its the things we dont bother for that present opportunities for some people.
I have a pay-as-you-go sim, too, and XBOX live isnt worth it for me at the moment. I barely have enough time to sleep, let alone play, Or even more so, play online. Most people online are good at the game, and since I dont get much practice time... it's not fun for the noob
You should have received an email from Microsoft a month or two before your subscription was about to end. The email has clear details regarding your subscription, with an option to keep your subscription or to cancel it. If no action is taken, Microsoft automatically charges your account for another year of service, which is also stated in the email.
they should let you cancel the service through xbox live. It's annoying being forced to call them and hear them ramble off a list of questions asking why you are leaving.
Any supscription service automaticly renewes, I got the same with ign insider and my god damn bank charged me an overdraft fee cause the money I had in my acount wasn't enough to cover ign, which I wasn't aware auto renewed. Needless to say I owed my bank 30 due to the damn auto renew. After I paid it off I closed my bank acount (cause the bank I was with had alot of ridiculess fees) and canceled my insider subscrition. I still get to use insider till about jan or feb I think then its over, hopefully they dont try and auto renew after cancling it.
Oh great, I wonder if this crap will happen to me too. Did you cancel it before, or was it like you used a 12 month sub and then it auto renewed? I'm pretty sure I cancelled mine so I should be ok, noone ever played DOA really. =(
This only happens if you have the auto renew thingie I believe. I payed for a month by using my credit card on the Live-menu-thingie and I didn't get it automatically renewed. Just got a message a few days before it ended suggesting me to renew it. Was without live gold for a few weeks, then Gears of War showed up so now I don't plan to stop using it any time soon
Hmmm, I hope that free EGM for a year thing won't renew itself. Other than MAYBE the last 15 page Halo 3 story (about new weapons and multiplayer), it isn't worth it.
I have to agree with everyone else. Its just like if you didn't use the internet for a month, and still had the service and ISP, and were still surprised to see a bill.
When I signed up did it was for verification purposes. Nowhere did it say "and perpetually bill you every year". Never mind that the xbox platorm is long dead, and that the subscription won't carry over to your 360 unit. I actually read through the whole legal statement when live first came out, I didn't want them selling my demographic info. Your isp , phone, electric, gas etc send you a paper statement. It's required by law. I only found out because I saw the charge on my card. Nothing in the mail, and e-mail notification is not a legal form of notification for billing, unless you accept a "paperless statement". Their action is probably illegal in the state I reside in. I find it distasteful because it's a calculated practice by ms that a certain percentage of people won't notice the charge on their credit card. A $50 profit on a dead device with a backdoor charge without notification that is legal in any sense. They regularly send me crap in the mail to promote accessories and products however. I think some of you are too young to remember what a subscription used to mean, and what it is now, how much corporations treat customers like things to exploit rather than serve as they used to. After all, they've convinced you that bank fees are normal, and that getting electronic statements are to "save the earth" instead of the real purpose of cutting mailing costs and saving them money. My favorite is hotels, they ask you to reuse the towels a few days in a row to "save the earth" when it's really a strategy to cut their energy costs by 2/3 and bring up profits. If they really cared about the earth they wouldn't have a heated pool in the hotel 24/7/365.
Most online sub-based services don't send you a paper bill/statement. No online games I've played ever have, anyway.
I like the card system. So you did get a refund right? They wouldn't let you carry the sub to the 360 if you still have it? You would think they'd let old xbox live be free besides Halo 2 or something...
considering the cost and the bandwidth, its hard to make it free. The service isnt bad for an online uniform one. I have my concerns about nintendo's free offerings. Anything free is worth what you paid for it, and if mariokart is any indication, the wait will be long, and the quitters un-penalized.
Yeah, I guess it makes sense, but really there's almost noone ever on those old Xbox games anymore. I meant like still charge for 360 and Halo 2 and not the other stuff but I guess it wouldn't work.
