Version 1.0 ro 1.5 are inter changeable , v1.6 has 1 less hole and isnt interchangeable with versions below 1.6 unless you either remove or mod the rf shield.

There's a change in height too, but it wouldn't matter. It's the shielding that can damage a 1.6 board in a <1.5 case.

It's not the shield that is the problem here, it's the screw hole missing near the Xcalibur chip. If you put a 1.6 motherboard in a <1.5 case, the extra standoff will crush a small transistor. The 1.6 case have lower standoffs for the 2 mounting screws of the AVIP port.

    It's all detailed here : http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/1.6_Xbox_no_power.htm

I've swapped 1.6 motherboard in older cases and older motherboard in 1.6 cases a few times in my life and it's the only two thing I ever noticed. Other than that it should be fine.

Shielding can damage the regulator, so yes it's the shielding also.

Oh ok I guess so since there is a small metal tab partially covering the extra stand off. I must admit I didn't think of it! I just go ahead and trim away the standoff and before that I remove the small metal tab. So yes, by extend, the shielding can cause failure.
