have you double checked that the network cables are good? for example your using the proper type such as straight cable or crossover as needed. Sounds to me like one of them isn't seeing the network properly or maybe you have it set for the wrong port? the original xbox used port 21

    Can you 'ping' the box?

Do you have sth running on it it that provides the FTP server functionality (e.g. EvoX or xbmc)?

Oh and FYI, once you get your networking sorted: I recall having problems with the FileZilla/xbox combination (can't remember offhand what it was exactly though). If you don't have a strong preference for FZ I'd recommend FlashFXP.

Strange. I use Filezilla for ftp client and I have no problems. But I run my setup through a router so that may help. If you're trying to connect the Xbox directly to your PC LAN then you will have to use the Xbox link cable. For my router I just use a standard LAN cable and set the Xbox network to DHCP. Then enter the IP of it, name, password, port number, and everything connects up fine. It does for me anyways.

No route to host = network issue or not running a ftp server on the box. Its kinda in the error description

I'm not well up on these things, but I'd imagine your firewall might be a problem, have you told your firewall to let your FTP program through? And is your XBox modded? I don't know if an unmodded XBox can use FTP with a PC.

    I'd suggest following this guide;

    http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/~xbox/xbox-scene/tutorials/Networking_the_xbox.pdf

and if it doesn't work, then disconnect your PC from the net (i.e unplug the router), then turn off your firewall, and try it, and if it works then you know the problem is your firewall. If it doesn't work, then turn off another Windows porgram you have running, and see if you can connect to your XBox now. Trial and error until you find out the problem, I'm afraid.

It's worth it though, as once it works, it is so fast and convenient to FPT data to/from your XBox.

If you're using Avalaunch (I think that's what I have) it sucks for FTP support. Atleast FileZilla didn't like it at all. However Xbox Media Center works great. So it could be whatever your FTP host program is.

I use unleashed x and just connect my xbox to my router via ethernet cable, my macbook connects to the same network via wifi and using cyberduck ftp I just drag and drop files to the xbox, is your xbox setup up to connect using DHCP or is it using the default ip address it has when you mod it, if the latter then make sure the ip is in the rage that your network is set to give out.

e.g. my modded xbox was setup to use 192.168.x.x where as my router was setup to give out 10.0.x.x so I just changed my router to match my xbox settings

Yes, you can also install stuff from a flash stick. Or you can copy it off a burned CD/DVD. But if it's a network problem you'll keep having your problem even with xbmc, so...

    Can you 'ping' the Xbox?

Do you have sth running on it it that provides the FTP server functionality (e.g. is the server turned on in your UX dashboard)?

Pretty sure the xbox does not respond to ICMP, so its pointless pinging it.

This just sounds like basic networking failure.

Make sure Xbox is set for DHCP and plug it into your router. Check what the new ip address is and connect.

I think it might depend on the running application - XBMC does respond, and judging by some Xbox networking tutorials, apparently does the official MS dash. No idea about UnleashX.
