Has anyone replaced the joysticks on their xbox one control? I was browsing eBay and saw some mixed reviews. I have no problem with the install. I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a good source. It looks like the joy sticks are different depending upon the controller model? Looking for 1537 replacements. Are the ones on eBay actual ALPS switches or counterfeit?
The ones on ebay are all fake. The ALPS mechanical sticks are ok it the potentiomitors that are garbage. They all have a massive dead zone in the centre compared to original or higher priced ones. I've managed to find a supplier that breaks full consoles into component parts so I know the ones I have are 100% as they have solder on the pins. Here is one of me fixing an Elite controller.
That's a nice little jig. What's the name of that flux? Does it come like that or did you put it in the tube?
btw all xbone controllers use the same sticks, the only difference is the elite has a metal tube in the shaft, doesn’t make it any more durable though. I generally gut a controller for the pots. 4 bad= 3 good
Mouser actually has real ALPS joysticks in stock sometimes. I bought some from them before and they were definitely real. They're expensive though and even with original sticks you still sometimes get a few that read as though you're constantly tilting it in one direction when you aren't even pressing on it. I don't know about Xbox One controllers, but for PS4 at least it's fairly easy to test the stick without actually soldering it in if you just insert it and bend the legs of the potentiometers to make contact while you look at the input readings in DS4Windows to see if the stick is centered. That way you can avoid wasting time by soldering in a stick that may or may not actually be good. Some of the aftermarket ones on eBay and Aliexpress are okay. Depending on who you buy them from, maybe 1 in 10 or 1 in 5 are good. I use these now and usually about half of them work fine right off the bat (the #1 and #6 varieties, at least). Usually I can get the ones that are bad to work properly by removing the potentiometers from the sides and replacing them with known good potentiometers from another stick. Just avoid the orange ones. The sticks on those are usually very nice and rotate smoothly, but the vast majority of them have bad potentiometers that'll cause the input to read as though you're tilting the joystick when you actually aren't.
All good info above! Unfortunaley with the amunt of controllers I fix on a weekly basis I have to pay extra for the propper ALPS ones from China. There seems to be alot of issues with the Elite controllers. Once you replace a pot 90% of the time it will never centre correctly. The general thinking is that these are calibrated at the factory. I'd love to figure out how it's done. However I have had to come up with a way to get every stick centering correctly on the Elite's now so not an issue. The only claibration commands I've found and can't get to work are: Hold down L3 or R3 (depending on the stick thats drifting) for 15 seconds and rotate clockwise and anticlock wise while still holding the L3/R3 down. PS4 pads no issue at all slap in a new stick or pot and onto the next one.
I don't repair Xbox One controllers often, but I do have the same issue with PS4 controllers where after installing a new stick it'll be significantly off center. I even have that problem with the genuine ALPS sticks I got from Mouser. As long as it's not really severely misaligned, I can usually fix it by bending these parts with pliers in the opposite direction of the tilt (i.e. if it's tilted too far up, then I bend this piece down and vice-versa): If it's misaligned horizontally, then you can bend these white parts left or right until it's centered: Maybe 75% of the time I can fix miscalibrated stick this way. But I do often end up bending those things too far and end up causing, say, upward tilt in a stick that originally had downward tilt. It just takes some trial and error but eventually I can usually get it just right. You can do the same thing in Xbox One controllers, though the colors of the parts are different. I find it's more difficult though because in Xbox One controllers the stick is flush with the PCB, so you can't easily pry off the potentiometers without the risk of damaging or lifting the solder pads. With PS4 controllers though the sticks are actually raised a bit off the board so you can easily pry the pots off the side of the stick without causing much strain to the pads. Not these particular ones, but you can find the PS2 and Xbox sticks on Aliexpress and eBay as well. I have no idea about the quality though since I don't really have much experience with them.
