If the Xbox has never been opened then it's softmodded. Look if the rubber feets are still in place and that both stickers underneath the casing are untouched and it should tell you it never been opened. Of course someone could have removed the stickers and placed them back there but it is really unlikely.

If it's been opened, you'll have to open it again to physically check what kind of mod you have, TSOP or Modchip. You'll need a TORX20 and TORX10 screw drivers. Take a picture of the motherboard and post it here if you're still unsure of the modchip.

Fire the box up. If you get to the MS dash with no game disk inserted then you either have a stock box or hard mod for BIOS. If you get to some other dash like EVOX, Unleash X, or XBMC then you have soft mod. For hard mods, you have to crack it open and see what has been changed. Look at HDD. Stock should either be 8 or 10 GB depending on revision. Also check the DVD drive. Stock should have a 10 pin yellow cable coming off to the motherboard. If it has a standard 4 pin molex then the drive isn't stock. Lastly look for a mod chip. they typically reside under the DVD drive on the access connection there if it's a simple design that hooks straight to the board. Others may have wires coming from this port to another location for the chip. There may also be other stuff like USB hub or ports connected to controller ports since they're USB 1.1 protocol. Basically anything that looks out of place is a mod. Stock Xbox will only have a single IDE cable going to DVD and HDD. DVD will have the yellow cable going to motherboard. There will be 4 connection at front for the controllers that each have a red, black, green, white, and yellow wire. There is a short connection for the front panel buttons and LED lights. Lastly you have the cooling fan in back and power connection to the PSU. Anything beyond these connections is most likely a mod of some kind.

Not true at all. I have a TSOP modded system that boots direct to XMBC. Hard mod doesn't always go to MS dash. Since you're running your own BIOS with a hard mod you can configure it however you like.

That's not completely true, both of my XBoxes are hard modded, and both boot into Evo-X. One of the chips can be turned on or off (to stop XBox Live! detecting it, back in the days when XBox Live! supported the original XBox), this is done with the XBox's On/Off switch on the front of the XBox; if there's no disc in the DVD drive then you just touch the XBox On/Off button then the XBox boots up without the mod chip, straight into the MS dashboard, but if you hold the switch in for a second or so then the XBox boots up with the mod chip enabled, and the XBox boots into Evo-X.

The other XBox always boots into Evo-X (if there's no disc in the DVD drive, I mean), and always has the mod chip enabled. When this XBox boots up it has a pink symbol in the top lefthand corner of the boot screen (see http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?clie...nh=192&tbnw=221&start=0&ndsp=19&tx=109&ty=107).

I'm not saying that is how it is. I was simply going over all possible scenarios. Is it not possible for someone to have alternate BIOS from a chip and everything else stock for something simple like alternate region playing? I would think so...

I don't know, my knowledge of XBox modding is very simple, sadly. I did think that there'd probably be an XBox program that would examine the BIOS and detect the presence of a mod chip, and say what if anything is present, but Google doesn't reveal any. I was sure the Hexen installer disc (which is *excellent* for installing software onto a modded XBox, get it from http://theisozone.com/downloads/xbox/xbox-isos/heimdalls-hexen-xbox-engineering-disc-usa/) would have this feature, but if it does, I can't find it in the menus (and I don't want to experiment, in case I somehow mess up my working XBox/Bios/mod chip/stuff on the hard drive/etc).

There is an app that can detect what Bios you have. It won't really tell you what's the brand of your modchip. Some high-end modchips have OS (aka config menus) that can be triggered at boot, that way you can easily identify them if you know how to trigger the OS.

For the rest, there is nothing like a physical inspection. If you sent out the Xbox to be modded by some guy a while ago there's a good chance he installed you either an Aladdin chip (which rev?) or maybe a DuoX2. Mass modders usually don't bother installing high end chips since most customer will just want to play"backups" with them.

What are the practical differences (as in, the differences the end user will see) between different mod chips? I know some are switchable (as in can be turned off to avoid XBox Live! detecting the chip), some can support the BIOS (or whatever is involved) that will allow larger capacity hard drives than 120ish GB, some have two or more banks (presumably to support multiple BIOSes? If so, what advantages does this bring to the user), and I think some are flashable by the user and some are pre-flashed only.

I didn't specifiy what chips to have put into my XBoxes, as I didn't know there were a range of them, but (fortunately) even though they were cheap they have done everything I wanted (boot up into Evo-X, run all XBox games from hard drive, run emulators and game ports, etc), so is there any reason for anyone getting an XBox now to choose a certain type of mod chip, or are they all equally as good for most users?

If you're seeing EVOX on the bios it's most likely a Duo X2. There are clones of the Duo X2 called Duo X3.

Well most modchip will support to be switched off for Xbox Live. Also most bioses are 256KB which will fit any modchip. The smallest are the Aladdin line with a single 256KB flash chip. So you cannot tell what modchip you have by checking the bios, except if you have an Xecuter 3 which has an exclusive "X3 Config Live" bios.

Other than that, the only clue you can have that you have a modchip with bigger capacity than 256KB is if your Xbox cold boot to a screen saying "Xecuter 2 Config Live Loading" for a few seconds and then proceed to boot as normal. Then it means you have a modchip with at least 512KB flash chip since you're running "X2 Config Live" bios but it doesn't tell you alot more.

If you didn't specify what chip you wanted and used the service of a modder you can find in Classified Ads or Craiglist then it's most likely a Aladdin or DuoX2/3.
