My friend has an NTSC-U Xbox but wants to play PAL games. Can a soft mod be done or would it have to be chipped? If it can be soft modded what would he need? I cant find a tutorial. Any help much appreciated :smt023

It should be multiregion if that's what you set it to in Evolution X. Mine's supposedly multiregion but I don't have an import game to test it with, nor any pirated games (I'd rather buy them).

I'm wondering if it will run on an NTSC television set.

yep it should run on a NTSC TV, most modern tvs run at 50/60hz (pal 50, NTSC 60)refreshing rate as opposed to a mono one. Bacially if you have had a game like pal shenmue 2 (Dreamcast) running on your TV you can be sure it will work. My chip (actually come to think of it, EvoX) automatically detects the region, when i load a non local-region game i see no change (i have a few JPN and US releases). I would check up on www.xbox-scene.com, i find they almost have too much information!

well, that is not the case, from what I gathered. (Virtually) All PAL TV's made in the last 10 years support NTSC, but very few NTSC TV's actually support PAL, ask Greatsaintlouis :p
The reason Shenmue II works is that it detects the region of your Dreamcast and switches video mode accordingly.

If you do the dashboard replacement, you can get the "video mode switcher" to force the XBOX to output the games/video/whatever in PAL or NTSC. Very good if you have an old TV that won't support certain modes/regions.

A stock unmodded PAL Xbox will not work with [most] NTSC TVs--the picture is gray, jumpy, and fuzzy.

Of course, I'm sure everyone knew that, but what the heck.

Antipasta already said the same exact thing.... :-( :smt043

apparently launch PAL Xbox had a bug that lets you se HD AV pack although only at 480i... I know you ask what's the point of 480i but the clarity is somehow better than S-video. From memory M$ fixed it in subsequent revision...

there was thread on avforums.com about changing video mode of Xbox to NTSC and moving the mod chip entirely and apparently it worked well but from what I heard M$ has implemented to check your video mode and if PAL Xbox is running NTSC mode your Xbox is banned even if it has no mod chip on it... could be wrong but that's how I remember the outcome of that issue...
