I'm looking at getting a new TV, and i was wondering if it was worth getting a tv that handles 1080p for using my Xbox360 on? If im correct the Xbox360 just upscales everything to 1080p (apart from hddvd's) so it wouldnt matter much if you use 720p or 1080p for Xbox360 games, or am i wrong?
Yes, the 360 upscales all games with HDDVD's being played at 1080p. However HDDVD's and upscalled DVD's will only be at 1080p over vga and the impending HDMI. But it will do hddvd at 1080i on component, and with a set equiped with a good deinterlacer it will be almost like 1080p. Is it worth it is a completely different mannar, with almost all cases it's dependant on the size of set and viewing distance. If your looking at 50+ inches than 1080p is a big plus, but something smaller around 40in would be beneficial if your sitting around 5ft away, but approx 10 and it's mostly unnoticable. Anything smaller than 40 and your looking at an even closer viewing distance for the few 36in 1080p sets. On the inverse you can view 1080p as a investment for the future as more forms of media begin to support that resolution. Additionally as I said above, 1080i deinterlaced is almost as good as native 1080p, and many HD channels are 1080i in the US. Now that being said, it's obviously a good decision to have a set that can handle 1080p signals, even if cant display that resolution(see PS3 scaling issues). Really the decision all comes down to how much you intend to spend and how large of a set you want. If your looking at investing a good chunk of change on a set that will last you over 5yrs then you should seriously think about 1080p. But you could spend a little less and in a couple years purchase a 1080p set with the knowlege that the price will be significantly less and likely have superior picture quality and features. If you do go with 1080p you'll likely spend around 300-400$ more on a 40in set, but dont quote me on that. Either way it's a hard decision and largly dependant on circumstance, much like plasma vs lcd
