If this has been posted here already then I missed it, please delete this thread! http://xbox360.qj.net/Video-deconstructing-the-Xbox-360-s-silicon-based-security/pg/49/aid/110727 Very interesting video on how the XB360 has finally been made to run Linux. Pretty amazing stuff. At the end, Wii-mode homebrew too.
some people only own a PS3 unfortunately (for them) =P j/k I d love to see the 360 put into homebrew action, or even better, being used as a desktop platform
Well, I think it is great, that both the 360 and the WII is finally getting hacked bigtime. wasn´t it the same german people that explained the shebang about the XBOX some years ago ? about the security of that platform ? And also with the gamecube and very early WII thing ? Anyway I think it is great
I think they should fire that first guy, as he really has no clue about hacking or the background of mods. And the second guy: what the hell is he talking about 'Microsoft doesn't like Linux'? Noting they've so far given $60million in the last year to Novell and that Microsoft's XBox division doesn't really care about OS politics, I would say that it's probably the 'piracy, malware' issues rather than the 'cheating, Linux installation' issues. That aside, it's an alright talk but fairly bland (unlike the Xbox one, which was well presented).
Yeah! Let's open the flood gates for cheaply ported-over emulators! (credits to them though! I don't feel like watching the vid, I'll just wait for a PDF)
What the... Of course Microsoft don't like Linux. Can you imagine if they allowed Linux on a console of theirs? It would be ridiculous! Microsoft are in a tricky situation with giving a console of theirs a 'proper' OS. They can't hurt their PC market after all (and all the 3rd parties they have to keep happy).
Perfect timing! I just killed my 360s DVD-ROM and you can't do jack to fix it unless you have the DVD-ROM key, and even then afaik all you can do is use the firmware that allows for backups potentially banning the console after X amount of time. Now gimme a modchip.
Why? They can run linux out of the box. Not to mention they've hacked it to allow HW 3D rendering not that long ago.
Not to my knollage. Ps3 nativly supports Linux (via an OtherOS mode) and for 3d, they found a way to dma packets to the gpu to get it to do 3D.
They filed suit that the Linux Kernel violates over 50 patents and are trying to get big names to pay royalties. I would say that qualifies for "not liking" something.
The HW accelerated 3D for Linux on PS3 only works for fw < 2.10 as sony fixed a bug in a allocation function that allowed access to the RSX memory.
Hmmm, do you really think the wii exlpoit was found on lego star wars ( the game keys via ram dumps or something)or was it just a bait for nintendo to miss the real deal?
Oh yeah 50 "patents" that violates their kernel, but where did MS "get" their ideas from well that was stolen from OS2 and other OSes so I think MS should look up in their own bum, before they make a lawsuit . It is old news by the way, but anyway I think MS are complete and utter idiots . But not all people working for MS are idiots.
You do realise Microsoft were part creators of OS/2 with IBM? And the main reason they pushed away from it was IBM trying to use OS/2 to push their own agenda (e.g. selling IBM hardware) where as Microsoft prefered an environment of Open Hardware. They didn't really steal anything, as they were involved from the beginning. ==EDIT== Fixing a slight mistake in the quote.
