I have a X3 chip and would love to do the LCD front panel mod but I can never find one of those complete panels up for sale. I have found somewhere that has the XLCD screen up for sale but nothing other than the screen So my question is: can everything needed to hook that screen up be bought over-the-counter or online commonly? or is there actual proprietary stuff that goes with that screen?
The modchip to XLCD cable will be the hardest part to find. And, it doesn't require an XCLD to work. There are many 4-bit parallel interface, 4 line by 20 character, HD44780 or TC2004B (smaller PCB) controlled screens that will work. They just have to be dimensionally compatible to fit the space available. Most of the inexpensive HD44780-based screens have a PCB that is too tall to fit without removing controller port 3 and 4. You can solder a ribbon cable to the connections on the X3 in front of the connector to an LCD screen. Not as handy with a permanent soldered connection instead of the plugin cable header. XLCD with cable makes installation much easier.
Thanks so much! I always wondered if that screen was a must. With the other projects I’m working on & planning, I don’t know that I want to go through all that. I’ll just keep waiting until I can find a more complete setup. Thanks so much!
