The problem seems to be the spindle. With the top off and lid down switch, I observed laser moving along the track and going up and down as it tried to focus but the spindle never spun. It turns freely so there isn't any jam or seized motor.

Where should I go from there? How can I tell if the motor is bad or if it's the driver chip? I haven't checked the cable other than reseating it at both end as I'm about to go to bed.

Also the black shield that goes over the assemble broke off, the white plastic part that holds the shield in place seems to break easily by what I found in Google search. Can I just forget about having it there? Or is the shield absolutely needed for normal operation?

Started checking around. I get 0v reading from the motor post when the disk is supposed to be spinning. I removed the board and checked the motor. It is a common DC motor RF-310T-11400 that normally operates from slow at about 2v to max at about 6v DC. When I checked with a battery, the motor spins so it is not the motor. Beside what are the odd of a slow 1x motor going bad? A 10k x motor mounted right on top of a very hot part I can understand (happens with XBox 360) but this one is slow and not mounted near anything warm.

Traced the circuit, the motor is controled by a BA6393, which is a suspect bad IC. Is there a way to tell for sure or what? Also I'd need to have someone do the chip swap as I don't have the tool or experience to handle small surface mounted IC.
