Hi Guys, XLR8 was develloped by simtex in 1997/98 (aldershot UK) the game was originally develloped for pc and psx. When simtex goes bankrupt the IP, and all the work and the team was purchased by thompson tsf The goal was to convert the game intro an arcade cabinet game. The game was playable at the sega center in london. it was also available in asia... The arcade machine hardware was Running with a custom voodoo 3dFX card I ve worked on the game. and got cleared by the reste of the team to release the file to the public (i ll upload them somewhere tonite...).most of the game is working with the glide emulator. Enjoy
Very cool that it focused on a first-person perspective. The level goes by so fast that I'd be on the edge of my seat in the arcades ready to put another damn coin in the machine! I like how after some linear "pipe-like" sequences the track opens up in wider portions where it could get a little frantic. Again, thanks for sharing! If it weren't for your efforts, cool titles like this would remain unknown.
The game was 1st person focus because the arcade machine was like a moving cockpit... it was a big yellow shell with 2 sit inside.(like a tiny version of the starwar ride shuttle in disney) Not sure the game was running that fast on the original hardware...maybe it s emulation.
So... Did any of your staff leave to work for Probe, or maybe the other way round? Because that looks a lot like Extreme-G.
Actually there a story here...but it s not mine to tell. I ve only ear of it by the art director and programer of game. I was young when Ive worked on this game and not involved in decision making. I ve cleared with the rest of the team to share the game a while ago...(when the site crashed) And i ve just uploaded it for you guys to "enjoy" you need a voodoo emulator to play it (like glide) it s super hard to play on a pc screen..control are super sensitive when you turn. It s kind of confusing to make it work at first..I ve added a text file with some instruction it may also work if you have a wheel...anyhow here you go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/myd7gi1qhdhl7rz/xlr8.rar?dl=0
Hi there, I was looking into this game a good while ago, and managed to collect a beta of it from a former dev. It too works in a Glide wrapper but has numerous unfinished elements (as I guess it was the pre-arcade PC game (which Europress advertised as coming soon in the UK in around 1997)) before it ended up as an arcade cabinet. The beta has a Direct3D and software versions, but I wasn't able to get them to run. I should see if I can upload the beta at some point, assuming it's okay (there's a warning from Simtex and a password needed to run it, but as they no longer exist it should be okay?).
I sent a message to the guy who sent me the file, to ask if it's okay to share. I'll PM you with it in a mo so you can take a look anyway! Incidentally for the arcade version, use a Glide Wrapper where you can force a higher resolution, as it looks a lot better in widescreen (e.g. nGlide or dgVoodoo2).
Thanks for sharing! This sure looks like the perfect game for arcade, loving the quick & in your face shut up and take my quarters style
Here's the WIP PC version, password is: athena Needs Glide 3Dfx wrapper like nGlide or dgVoodoo2. Download expires on 15th September, so host it elsewhere if you want to share: https://wetransfer.com/downloads/19...825fa90afe6eeade012b8e9c20170908224321/506b2e
Some notes: - Glide 3Dfx version works, the Direct3D and software ones are glitchy at best - For some reason, Keyboard1 and 2 don't work for me now, only Mouse control does a bit, and I can't move the bike! Might need a controller plugged in, I forget... - There's a folder in root drive called "Copy of dm_05", but there's no dm_05 folder, so maybe it needs renaming - One day I managed to access a second set of bonus tracks somehow, but I don't know what I pressed to do so! - Some tracks are unfinished and you start the track falling through space. - There's no sound effects, just music Some keys: Del key = shows all sorts of debug info Numpad keys = swaps weapons in practice arena Function keys = changes views Number keys (top of keyboard) = changes between opponents Again, running in a Glide wrapper in widescreen looks better, as per the arcade version above (though maybe more cropped).
Sorry dude I couldnt share the files as we talked last week. I was at the hospital for few day, And i m currently busy with work. Be back in a short while... so thanks to you for sharing this files.
So if this was an arcade game, is it something that could potentially be a candidate for adding to MAME for emulation? I know MAME has emulation of the 3DFX hardware.
I was able to get both versions of this working with my Voodoo 3-based system. It's pretty cool; the graphics are impressive for the time. It doesn't seem to support game controllers, so I had to use the keyboard. That's weird, because it was the exact opposite for me; there's sound effects, but no music.
I uploaded it again, but it's only available until 24th December, so go get it (and re-host elsewhere if you can!) https://wetransfer.com/downloads/9f...4015a049d1d8754c3e8e513a20171217195401/f3367e
