I've got an XMD-2 RGB to S-vid converter for mega drive use and tested it w/ my jap. SMS and Neo geo as well, since they're supposed to have the same RGB output configuration as the MD. but there is only a blank screen instead of a crispy s-vid signal. but why?

what are the criteria that it will work with the sms or ng as well?

OK I see the point with the DIN type connector. But the pinouts at least seeming to be 100% identical, if I compare the two links.

    Thanx.

The video signal strengths between consoles is different, the MD RGB lines should go through a resistor and a coupling cap (which the XMD2 does internally), it's probably built so if the signal is not strong enough it blanks the signal. On the Neo Geo the RGB lines already have the resistor and caps internally...

You could modify the XMD2 so it would work with a Neo Geo and MS...

The pinouts may match but I'm not sure if the connectors will fit together properly and if you force it you could damage/deform something.

As Jamtex said there could be/are differences in video output details. In theory you could make some sort of adapter between the system and the XMD but at this point I don't see why you don't just build your own S-Video adapter with a JROK encoder or something.

The DIN connectors may look alike, but they are certainly different. My AES RGB cables don't fit on my Megadrive. I think there is also something different with the sync signal.

    Neo-Geo uses a "C"-shaped DIN connector, while MD uses a "U"-shaped connector.

OK, I finally tried the XMD-2 with my Neo geo and there is only a very weak to almost blank signal.

Does someone know of a RGB to S-Vid converter, which is working properly with the Neo Geo? And sure doesn't cost like a fortune.

    Thanks :)

LOL yeah, found that out as well. But thanks :)

I probably will try the thing mentioned by jamtex above. remove the caps and by-pass the resistors.

What type of Neo Geo do you have (motherboard revision)?
Try switching pins 3 and 7 if using the GameSX Neo-Geo pinout. One is sync, the other one is a composite signal that also carries sync. You want to use the pure sync I believe. With my XRGB and Panasonic television I ran into issues using the composite signal as sync.
