Xplorer 64/Cheat Cartridge Question Hi all, Recently ordered an Everdrive 2.0 and anxiously awaiting delivery but also wondering if my Xplorer 64 cheat cartridge will work as well as a rumble pack? I know the Everdrive only emulates but I didn't know if it will pick up on extra devices or not? Great forum btw! Thanks!
I don't know for definite if a Gamehark/Explorer 64/Equaliser is incompatible with the ED64, but other people have said so, and I haven't dared try my two (I have both an Xplorer 64 and an Equaliser). The problem is, apparently, that when one of the cheat devices detects that it's plugged into another cheat device then it assumes that you're trying to fix the top device, and so replaces the data with data from the bottom cheat device, this is a way for you to fix a Gameshark/etc if it's firmware gets corrupted. That's fine except that, according to what I've read, if you try a cheat device with an ED64, then the Gameshark/etc wrongly detects the ED64 as a cheat cartridge too, and assumes you want to replace the data on the cheat cartridge with data from the Ed64 (which the cheat cartridge assumes is another cheat cartridge). The cheat cartridge starts to overwrite it's own data, then locks up the N64 when it can't find any cheat data on the ED64, which has the result that the cheat cartridge is now bricked (useless) unless presumably you can later on fix it by connecting it to a genuine cheat device to fix it. Do a search on this forum, or the official forum at http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?board=4.0 , for more information. If you do decide to risk the Xplorer then please let us know the results, but I wouldn't advise you to do it. It might even damage the ED64, I'm not saying it will, just warning you. BTW, when you get the ED64 (which is fantastic!) don't forget to use the updated OS on your SD Card (download it from http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=1047.0), and have a look at the game mod suggestions in http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=999.0
Hi Conker, Thank you for the informative post, the links and the pre-warning! Obviously the ED64 isn't cheap (although for the convenience of 100+ roms through the actual console is well worth it) I'd rather not risk it. Defiantly going to check out the game modding MKC
