Someone just paid me in Euros, but I don't have a Euro account. I have a Japanese account so it only gives me the option to exchange the money (about $600) into Japanese yen. From there I have to exchange it to US Dollars through Paypal again. As you can imagine the double exchange using PayPal's exchange rates is creating quite a loss for nothing.

So I decide to issue a refund and ask the Buyer to send payment in US dollars. I click on the buttons and think it's going to be as easy as all of my other refunds.

When I see my account page again I notice that it says the refund is pending. It says that it's using my US bank account as the funding source, not my PayPal funds, even tho I have the money in my PayPal account since I just received it from him. Then I realize that it never gave me the option of choosing a funding source.

So what does this all mean?

It means that he'll have to wait 2-3 days to get his refund. The beauty of it all is that I'll have to send $600 from my PayPal account to my US bank account to cover the $600 that PayPal is taking from my US bank account and sending to...Paypal.

The customer service rep on the phone said she doesn't know why the system works like that and that there's no way to cancel it. I just hope the two $600 transfers have a chance to waive to each other as they pass on by....

Solution: Block currencies you don't have an account for.

I also had this happen recently. Sounds like a Paypal ploy, considering any other transaction draws from the available balance first.

The CSR wasn't really able to explain it, but my guess is that since I accepted the payment (I had to click a button to accept it) then that's what started this whole mess. Once the money was put in to my Paypal account it wasn't able to follow the same path back again.

Another new twist....PayPal is telling him he has to wait up to 30 days to get the refund since he used a one-time debit card. Lovely. Thank God he wants Sea shipping...
