Hiya People, not sure if this is the right location but i guess it's general gaming so i thought why not. to cut a long story short my launch ps3 ( 60gb ) decided enough was enough and i had killed enough on MW2 and bam turned it self off and flashed at me. Have looked on the web and even phoned sony ( but at 130 quid i think they lose ) does any one now of a good site or a diy way of fixing it ? many thanks :gravedigging:
Maybe try one of the services out there that will try fixing a YLOD for you. Not all YLOD can be saved but it sounds like a decent number can.
This is going to sound really crafty but my friend had a similar problem he got a YLOD on his launch PS3 and he phoned Sony and the store he had brought it from but obviously the 2 years were out of date to get it replaced. So instead he did the hair-dryer trick to get it working long enough to get his saves off and then went and traded it in which took 140 pounds off the slim price here in the UK
I hate this kind of behaviour. You know full well the store are going check it turns on and then punt it straight back out, probably to some kid's parents just in time for Christmas. Your console breaks out of warranty, you do what the rest of us do - call it quits or buy another. You don't palm the problem off onto someone else, that's not on.
Indeed, that's pretty evil. I imagine the faces of the ones doing this stupid trick if they are ever the victims of this behavior. One could get a bit of money for spare parts instead of doing this.
Agreed, try to get all your data off it, and then either try a DIY fix or sell it for parts. People will buy it, especially if it has the PS2 hardware in it to play PS2 games. -Disjaukifa
I'd pay the 130. They offer a warranty of 1 year on the repair right? You could sell it on later, if you so desired.
Actually thTs a really good idea if it's the model that's backwards compatible with the Playstation 2. You would make more than enough from the sale to get a slim and maybe recover part of the cost of the repair. I know around my area the PS3 that have the hardware for the PS2 still go for more than new PS3 Slims. -Disjaukifa
The problem is properly cooling it off after use. You need to let a ps3 fat sit for a good 5-7 minutes at the menu after gaming to cool down. If you shut it off right after MW2 and there's no fan running of course you're going to get fatal cracks in the solder balls.
It's not often your wrong but in this instance I think you are......generally speaking if you force something from a high temp to a low one your gonna get problems especially brittle metals like lead/zinc, usually it leads to distortion or breakage, on the other hand if you let them cool naturally let's say at room temperature it wouldn't do anything, many years of manipulating metals/alloys have taught me this. The problem I've found with ps3's that ylod is localized heat for prolonged periods which causes the pcb to flex which puts pressure on the solder joints, like the rrod on the 360...and the thing what causes this is dust build up. The solution is to suck all the dust out with a hoover every 4 weeks.
It's not the metal, it's the uneven cooling of the pcb that warps and damages the hardware in the 360 and ps3. I should have been more specific.
It's uneven heat distribution in general that kills the newer consoles (heating up and cooling down)...but the main difference between the 360 and ps3 is that the rrod would kill because of very poor design, but the ps3 ylod only affects well used consoles...dust and debris build up on everything and then it does a uncanny 360 impersonation overheats and kills itself
Agreed, and its not just new consoles either, happens with laptops that are more desktops. I take my vacuum cleaners extension to all my consoles about once a month. I don't like to use air cans because they push the dust further into the console or laptop and your hoping it comes out. I like using the vacuum attachment because its sucking the dust out of the vent system and you don't have to worry about possible damaging the fans by packing dust into them while trying to get dust out with an air can. My wife used an air can to keep cleaning out her laptop's main vent and the fan died in it. When I went to replace it, she had blown so much dust so deep into the fan with the air can that the bears in the fan had completely locked up :-0. Air Cans are good for cleaning dust off of very exposed areas, however for cleaning out vents in electronics I just use my vacuum cleaner with the hose attachment. Just my two cents  -Disjaukifa
There's a reballing service on eBay that looks pretty legitimate. I believe the store is called spitfiremods. They're based out of Philadelphia and only charge $70 to reball a console.
well thanks for the pointers and i would like to point out i am not even considering the hair dryer idea. and yes i could trade it when i get fixed but i like the fact it plays my ps2 games so i would like to keep hold of it. and i hadn't turned it off it was still on and just in between matches on MW2 silly thing, but i may try the vacuum idea but may be a bit late me thinks
Let us know what happens, it sucks that this has happened! I'd be interested to hear if the vacuum trick works, but no guarantees on that. -Disjaukifa
DONT trade it in its FULL BC compatible only get another 20 or 60 model because the 80 model is 50/50 on FULL and HALF software and the HALF sucks ass wont even load swap magic just Google FMCB it will take you to PSX-SCENE the admin there dose fair repairs for YLOD
