A quote from chaiman ken: Kutaragi pointedly commented of the next-gen console, which is due to launch this November at dual price points of $499 and $599 in North America: "We don't say it's a game console (*laugh*) - PlayStation 3 is clearly a computer, unlike the PlayStations [released] so far." Wasn't ps2 supposed to make me toast in the morning and sing me to sleep at night? I really do hope it's upgradable, because then it can get hacked to bits and might be useful as a linux supercomputer or similar. Next PSP will be a "laptop" if we go by ken's standards..
No no no, PS2 wasn't supposed to make toast and sing you to sleep...if I recall it was so powerful it could be used to launch nuclear missles. Maybe they'll live up to that on PS3...and all future wars will be fought on Playstation...in high definition.
If it is a computer: will I be able to use windows, connect it to a monitor, play Battlefield 2 on max settings, connect to the internet via firefox with keyboard and mouse in hand, get on YIM, do a word document, use the scanner from work with the special program I have to read barcodes and set prices, print stuff out, all with the option of upgrading my RAM, CPU, Hard Drive, and Graphics card when technology cacthes up? Yeah, Kutaragi is full of shit sometimes.
Well, the PS3 seems capable of launching ICBMS (Incomprehensible, Completely Bullshit Mission Statements).
Oh goodie! I can pay $600 for the good version that can use a OS that is barely compatable with anything I would get use out of, or pay $300 for a computer that can already do more out of the box with all the features (besides gaming) intact. Yeah, like I said: the PS3 is no computer. I dare say consumers think the same as well. EDIT: While we are on the subject: If the PS3 was supposed to be a "Replacement for the PC", why did they remove half of the slots/USB drives that they showed from E3 2005? Granted, it was done for price reasons, but if they were serious about it being a replacement for a PC, you would think they would make that a main selling point.
besides, afaik the linux on PS3 is of the 'embedded' variety, ie, as a user, you will never see it, just Sony front end menu system (which looks to be based on the same design the PSP and PS-X use).
The thing about PS3 killing hte PC is old news. Where have you been? We all know that is untrue. How the hell are you supposed to type on the PS3 if it doesn't come with a keyboard and mouse? Use the freaking Dpad?
I reckon all this computer BS will end up exactly like the Sony Linux support for the PS2. A tax dodge and nothing more. Even Sony knows that upgradable components beyond the HDD is silly. While they may upgrade the functions with later additions - Like DVDr or Remote controller support on the PS2. I doubt this will amount to anything serious. Even though my Japanese launch PS2 needs DVD drivers on the memory card, is noisy, and has completely different internal setup to the one I am using right now, does not mean it does not play the same games in exactly the same fashion.
That has to be Quote of the Week. Made me laugh anyway. As for all this business of PS2 being powerful to launch Nukes, I'm sure you could do the same with a NES. After Kevin Horton's fiddled with it.
I can't believe you guys everything sony says is true. The pc is dead no need for upgrades sony gives you everything you need. Need more ram hell no sony gave you enough, need a better video card hell no Rsx and cell can do it all. Hey remember that stupid monitor you have on your desk haha those are the things of the past get a xbr wega bravia hd or sdtv television. Sony knows what people need from a pc that is why they put a web browser (sony in house i might add {know one knows better about the web than sony. they hired al gore to help them make the browser for his internet}) What else do you need oh you said you need a keyboard. No need with voice chat with video why put a smilie face like this when you can do it like this (need a ps3 with eyetoy2 to see the remarks made in this post). All in all ps3 will be the digital media hub that everyone wants. And i didn't even tell you it was a blue ray player. It's a Blue Ray player what else should sony throw in hmmm how about RIDGE RACER. Dude pc is so toast.
Isn't linux just being dumped on the ps3's HD to avoid the import taxes by classing it as a computer.
Not all computers can run windows, although vmware ought to run on it. More likely you'll be able to use Mac On Linux to boot MacOS. PS2 can connect to a monitor, so I don't see why PS3 won't be able to. Not all computers can run Battlefield 2 on max settings. PS2 can connect to the internet so why not? Firefox runs on Linux so you should be ok. PS2 supports usb keyboard and mice, so PS3 should be able to. You'll have to see if YIM is compiled for PS3, it runs on Linux but you'll need the source code. I can't possibly comment whether it will work with the scanner from work, our old parallel scanner at work is a bit temperamental what pc's it will work with. Your special program runs on all computers? How about my c64? Or is that not a computer? Or a Mac/Linux box etc? Not all computers allow you to upgrade the ram, cpu & graphics. They've already announced that the hard drive is upgradable, although we'll see if thats actually true in a couple of months. I don't think Ken is the only one full of shit. smf
That is possible, we'll find out soon enough. It will be interesting to see what they do about supplying the source code for the kernel etc. The existance of the PS2 Linux kit would suggest that at least at some point they will put out a full version of Linux for the PS3, even if it's not included at launch. Supporting home development is nothing new for Sony & the Yaroze proves it's not just a tax dodging measure. It's obvious they want to get into computers, but consoles were the only way into the market. Otherwise I doubt they'd have named it Sony Computer Entertainment. Microsoft and Nintendo aren't going to allow people to run any code on their systems, so that gives Sony an edge in the market. The only way I'd justify spending launch money on the PS3 is if you can compile & run your own software on it. smf
I'm talking about standard computers you can find in a normal store. Not specialty (Touch screen for business, etc) or mac computers. Without accesories. I was refering more toward the ability to play PC games on a home console. Granted, I should have used a clearer example, but you get the point. Talking about a quick browser. I'll give you that one, but this goes back to one point: Why would I want to? I have a PC that I can easily pull stuff up. Problem is the USB keyboard. Cheapest one I found in Clarksville is $40. Why not add a standard Keyboard slot? No major comment. Oh lord...It is a DOS and Windows based program that can be used on both. Once again, I am talking about modern computers. Thing about PCs is they are usually made to be upgradeable, or have parts that are easily replaceable. Granted, I will give you the CPU and Graphics, although the RAM varies. I think you missed my point: What is the point in it being a PC? People either use computers for 3 reasons: Work, PC games, or various hobbies/casual stuff (internet, music, email, social, etc). Why would a businessman use a PS3 for work? Why spend 600 when you can get a PC that can do more 9/10ths of the time to do those hobbies? Granted, if PC gaming comes through on the PS3, that may be something, but I don't see it. The reason of my post is this: If you already have a PC, why would you pay extra for a "computer" that can play Playstation brand games, and if you don't: what is the point of buying a expensive "computer" that is limited? The PS3 is not a computer. It is a game machine branded as a computer to increase sales.
You took computer & PC to mean microsoft windows x86 compatible & thats not what it means. Not everyone likes microsoft, some people will only buy linux or macos computers. Those are still personal computers. Not all computers come with a monitor, The Mac Mini for a start but also there is no reason you have to buy a monitor from Dell/Compaq etc when you buy a computer from them. PS2 does have a standard keyboard interface that supports standard usb keyboards and mice. It's the games that don't always support them. Some games will only work with a controller & then you need one of those adaptors. The more people that have keyboards and mice connected to the PS3 the more chance games will support them. Most of your dos and windows programs will be running under emulation on your modern x86-64 based computer ( x86-32 is so out of date now ). So running them under emulation on another platform is equivalent. Alot of computers nowadays are built like lego, but not all. RAM is probably the only part of the PS3 that is feasible to upgrade and could possibly be expected to be. But having a fixed memory size doesn't stop it being a computer & possibly not stop it from being a good computer. We'll find out how much RAM it has soon enough, 1gb is cheap & they are charging enough for it already. I won't disagree that the announced price for the PS3 is too high. The point of it is that if buying a console for your kids allows them to do their homework and stuff like that then parents will do it. I think you understimate the number of c64's & spectrums that were sold for at a higher price than the PS3, because kids told their parents it would help them with homework. C64 was 400 quid back when it launched, over twenty years of inflation has gone by since then. However people expect the PS3 to be cheaper than the announced price & it probably should be if they want it to take off. I would expect the majority of people who buy a PS3 will buy PS3 games at some point. Some people will buy it because it runs Linux, some people will buy it because it plays Bluray. If it's like the PSP then they'll let you transfer MPEG4 movies onto the hard drive and play them back through your TV. Thats something that people will pay money for. Not all people have a computer & those that do don't necessarily have an up to date computer. So if Sony can reduce the cost a bit ( it's got to half in the next year or so ) then they could have a huge money maker. Like the next C64 or Amiga 500. One day everyone will have a computer in their living room under their tv & there is no reason it has to have a windows logo on it. smf
SMF you don't get the point. Jackson was not full of shit. His comment was supposed to be taken with a grain of salt but obviously you are unable to perform that and instead strike up a debate on how PS3 can be very much be considered a Personal PC. yes it can be a personal PC, however you need accessories in order to have PC like features. The OS in PS3 is built on Linux but does that mean you guys have full access to the kernel and run it like you can run those hundreds of other linux builds out there for regular PC systems? The answer is no. It is a closed system very much like Xbox 360 OS. They used linux for the OS to have higher level programs such as internet browsing (which is limited compared to a PC internet browser). Plus they dont have to pay a licensing fee for using Linux kernel. There are already computers in living rooms under TV. They are called: PS2s, Xbox, Tivo's, etc. Those are all computers that perform a certain function. What SOny, MS, and other manufacturers are tying to do is make it so that their hardware can replace most of those devices and become a central multimedia hub for entertainment. There will still be desktop PCs and the PCs that Jackson was referring to, will still be needed because then how will you be able to create the games that those consoles play? how will you be able to program software for hardware that has limited customization (ie PS3, Tivo, etc.).
