I was thinking the other day about, how every so often on almost every gaming forum, you see a "What are you top ten favourite games?" style thread. I've posted in a few of those threads myself, where you list which games you'd want to take to a hypothetical desert island, on which you're going to be isolated with only those ten video games.

The thing is, we always list our favourites games, which is fair enough, since the topic title often asks for your favourites, but since a game is amongst your favourites, it's logical that that game might be one you've already played repeatedly, and so it might not hold your attention too much if you try to replay it repeatedly in the future. Plus any of your favourite games might be short, or just plain lack replayability, so they're not necessarily the best games for you to spend the rest of your life with.

So, for the purposes of this thread, let's assume that you're being sent to this deserted island, with your ten favourite games, but you can also take five other games that you've not played (or at least not played enough to decide that you like them), so as to potentially give you five games that you can really sink a lot of time into. I've decided to make this topic since I, like most gamers (I assume), have a mental list of games that I intend to play one day, but never get around to. So, for me, these are the five not-favourite games I'd take with my ten favourite games to that desert island.

*Note: Please don't post any spoilers for any games, as other people might not have played that game*

    1. Chaos (ZX Spectrum).

I don't like strategy games, but I keep reading how great Chaos is, how it's simple to pick up, but extremely complicated to be really good at, so this would definately be one of my five.

    2. Lords of Midnight (ZX Spectrum).

Another Spectrum classic that I've never really played (well, I've messed about in it, but not attempted to really play). It was this or it's sequel, Doomdark's Revenge, but people tend to say that this is the better of the two (or do you disagree?), so Lords of Midnight it is.

    3. The Elderscrolls III: Morrowind (PC/original XBox)

I've never really played an Elderscrolls game, but I'd like to. I have tried Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, but so far they haven't grabbed me, so I'd like to really sink some time in one of them, and I've chosen Morrowind as:

    (a) people say things like "I've spent five hundred hours on Morrowind, and Iv'e enjoyed every second of it, but I've not completed the main quest - every time I go exploring I find something new to do". I'd love to have an experience like that.

    (b) I like the atmosphere in Morrowind. Oblivion and Skyrim are more beautiful, but Morrowind seems to have more atmosphere, judging from the (admittedly very short) time I've spend playing it.

    (c) I've modded Morrowind with some great third party mods, such as Weather Stones (you control the weather, which is great for me since I love rain in games), a house in a bottle, a mod that let'syou experience the journey when you travel on those giant insect things (it's great and really adds to the atmosphere), and others. In fact most of the time I intended to spend playing the game to get me to like I, I instead spent adding mods to the game and testing them. No doubt Oblivion and Skyrim also have such mods, and regarding gameplay, Skyrim is especially supposed to be much easier to get to grips with than Morrowind, but I choose to take Morrowind over the other two.

    4. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)

I've never played a Zelda game (yes, people like me exist!), but everyone says that the Zelda games are mostly very good indeed. I do have two N64 Zelda games (Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask), and two on the Gamecube (Windwaker, and Twilight Princess), and I inted to play them through someday. And for the hypothetical island, I'd take Majora's Mask, as it's supposed to be about time travel, and I love time travel stories.

    5. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (PC)

This game doesn't seem to be too popular, judging by the way it's so rarely mentioned in gaming conversations, and rarely seems to appear on "Best games" or "Favourite games" lists, but it does seem to have a real cult following amongst more hardcore action/PRG gamers. It's supposed to be very good indeed, though I can't confirm that since I've spent so little time trying it. But I'm told it's comparable to System Shock 2 or Deus Ex, depthwise, so I'd hopefully really enjoy it.

Others I mean to try, as everyone says that they are great:

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 (PC, original XBox)

I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but these are supposed to be excellent games even if you don't like Star Wars. Apparently the second game had a lot of content cut before release, but it is available as a fan made mod for the PC version now.

    Super Metroid (SNES)

The only Metroids I've played are Metroid Prime 1 and 2, 1 is fantastic, but I never got far in 2 before abandoning it for some reason. I mean to retry 2 sometime, and also Super Metroid, since many people say that SM is incredibly good, even after two decades of being played.

    Minecraft. (PC/XBox 360/PS3)

I have tried this a couple of times, and it never grabs me, but I do mean to give it a real go someday, and see why so many millions of people love it.

    Core Wars (PC)

An ancient game where you write a program to destroy other programs. Are there any games like this but more up to date, please?

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (PC/original XBox)

I love first person shooters (my favourite genre), but this is one I've never gotten anywhere with, as it's a realistic FPS. I don't mean 'realistic' as in Call of Duty (i.e. not realistic at all), but as in as realistic as you can get without having to remove a bullet from your virtual character's leg with a pair of pliers. I mean, when you're near a building then you literally have to crawl a couple of inches, look very carefully around you, crawl again, look again, craw - bang, you're dead. One sniper who you failed to see killed you with a single bullet to the head. And if there's an explosion in the distance, then you see the explosion before you hear it, as sound and light travel at realistic speeds (sort of, it is an old game). It's designed to be an accurate game, so that even if you lose, then your side can still win, and vice-versa. The game is said to be very good indeed, but since it is so hardcore (by gaming standards), it's far too demanding for people like me (who like games where you can charge in and shoot and take a few shots without dying), or the Medal of Duty brigade (who seem to think that recharging health, being able to shoot accurately whilst running, and being able to explode a grenade at your team-mates' feet without hurting them because friendly-fire damage is set to off, somehow makes the game 'realistic') so I doubt it sold well. There were a couple of sequels, which I know nothing about, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were dumbed down (actually, I'd be amazed if they weren't). But I do intend to give this game a proper go, one day, and on that desert island I've have little else to do.

Grimm Fandango. Another PC classic that I've never played, but everyone says is brilliant. I really liked Monkey Island, and Simon the Sorcerer, and so their sequels, plus others like The Dig, Beneath a Steel Sky, and the Broken Sword games, are also on my "I must play, one day" mental list.

Go! (A board game, that's been ported to almost ever machine you can name)

Go is a board game that's both much more complex (so I've read) and older than Chess. I've never played it, or met anyone who (as far as I know) could play the game, and the people I've mentioned it to have mostly never heard of it either. So I've always meant to learn how to play and get a version of it, but lack of free time and an abundance of other distractions always got in the way.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game) for details of the game, and to download a free version go to https://www.gnu.org/software/gnugo/ or http://www.britgo.org/gopcres/gopcres1.html

What five games would you choose?

Not counting games I've played a lot, my list would probably be:

    1) Skyrim, supposedly you can easily put hundreds of hours in it, and I'm going to assume I have access to mods (either from downloading them before or whatever, shut up), and Skyrim has a great and hilarious modding community.

    2) Civilization (IV or V), I have been meaning to play those, but I haven't gotten the time.

    3) Ride to Hell Retribution, because in my solitary paradise, I have to be reminded that crappy games exist. Though I could easily put Roadsters here.

    4) Grandia II, just recently got it, but haven't played it yet, so yeah.

    5) Sega GT (DC). I still haven't played it, so it counts.

Hrm *checks games on shelves*, I guess Ill go with these ones:

    1. Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories
Being released before there were set-in-stone rules for the card game, this game features a pretty interesting way of playing the game (monsters having no effects at all, the ability to combine cards to get new ones during a game). However, getting new cards is so incredibly hard, that this one will probably suck up a lot of time easily. (This game requires me taking my card collection with me, for the cardcodes and such)

    2. Toshinden 4
A beat 'em up, the first one I ever played, but its fun. Thats it ._.

    3. Music 2000
Not really a game, but making music will also easily suck up hours, so a great choice for the island I guess.

    4. Colony Wars - Red Sun
I did play this a couple times only, giving up on it because I couldnt get a hang of how to play (its one of the games my dad bought for the PS1 before it ended up with me when he sold it after I got my PS2). But I do think that this will probably more fun once I get the hang of it, especially considering I touched it for the last time more than 5 years ago.

    5. Spyro - Year of the Dragon
While I did finish the games story, I havent unlocked that stupid bonus level which requires every single collectible of the game to unlock. And Ive wasted a lot of time on this. A real lot.

And as I want to post this, I just saw that those are all PS1 titles, interesting...

    Wow, really good question.

    I would say...

    1. Gran Turismo 4 or Sega GT- Because I don't have any patience, and maybe being stuck on a desert island would give me the time.

    2. Star Ocean- I've never beaten it.

    3. The Orange Box- I've never finished Portal or will not play Half Life 2 or Team Fortress in my current state. Though TF2 shouldn't count if you have to use the internet to play it.

    4. Mass Effect- I'm not a big fan of Bioware, mostly because they were Xbox PC games. This can change if I can bother to go to Gamestop.

    5. Mirror's Edge?

This was hard, maybe I'll put up a more definitive list next year?

This would be in my 10 favorite games I would take, lol. I can not recommend this game enough. Like you said, I been playing it for 20 years and it never gets old, especially if you decide to get into speed running it. There are so many different catergories for speed runs, and they truly add infinite replay value to this already amazing game.

Sorry for the rant, I just really love Super Metroid, lol. Now back on topic.

1: Metroid: Zero Mission - The only 2-d Metroid game that ive only beaten a couple times. Seems like it would have some nice speed running options, although possibly not quite as many as Super Metroid.

2: Hexen - Only played this gem a couple times back when it was still new-ish. As a huge Doom fan (another game that would be in my 10 favorite i would bring, btw), i would probably get a lot of replay value out of Hexen as well.

3: Sonic & Knuckles : Never was too huge into the Sonic series, although I have played and beaten most of them at least once. With that said, S&K was probably my favorite 2-d Sonic, so thats the one I would probably bring.

4: Mortal Kombat 9 : As far as fighting games, I would only put 1 of them in my 10 favorite games i would bring (Killer Instinct 2). I really enjoyed MK9 though, and it would be nice to have a second fighter in the mix to play.

5: Ridge Racer 4: Not a racing fan at all, there is not one racer I would put in my 10 favorite. I did play the hell out of RR4 though, and it would be the one and only racer i would bring, just because i thought the drifting in it was fun.

Britney's Dance Beat. It's fun but embarrassing so on an island, I would FINALLY be able to beat it without judgment.
Grand Theft Auto III or higher. I've never had the patience to finish them.
Legend of Zelda Link Between Worlds. Never beaten a LoZ game either and this is the furthest I've gotten into one before I stopped.
Final Fantasy 9. I've started it over a dozen times and just can never seem to get out of the first disc.
No one can stop Mr. Domino. I own this game because I dated a girl who loved it. So I bought myself a copy and then we broke up. I still have it but I cant figure the damn game out. An island would give me time to do so.
