I love listening to full albums from bands. I don't know what it is, but I would rather listen to Zeppelin IV in its entirety versus just listening to Stairway to Heaven. Full albums don't get as much love anymore seemingly due to the switch from physical to digital distribution. Now people just download the singles and move on. Just wanted to get member's opinions on what their favorite full albums are. Also maybe there's been a recent album that isn't your favorite but it just felt like it needed to be listened to all in one shot. That for me would be Yeezus by Kanye West. I'm curious to hear the favorites.
Among my top favorite albums that I can and do listen entirely (ie. not just one or a couple of songs): Zaz - Sans Tsu Tsou (live) Red Hot Chili Pepers - Californication Final Fantasy I through IX soundtracks This is from the top of my head, and what I've been listening lately... I'll add more as I do some memory.
Favourite Album of all time is There's Nothing Left to Lose by the Foo Fighters, followed by Parachutes by Coldplay (anything since has just been spiritual europop wank)
My top 10 albums, in no particular order because I've never looked and ranked them: Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against The Machine Adele - 21 Ellie Goulding - Bright Lights Mayday Parade - Anywhere But Here Mayday Parade - A Lesson In Romantics MGMT - Oracular Spectular Or something like that. Last.FM would likely say different based upon most listened, but that's where its at in my head atleast. Probably something I'm forgetting.
Bill Withers - Live at Carnegie Hall Beach Boys - Pet Sounds Steve Reich - City Life Hallucinogen - Twisted
These are some of my favorite albums (the ones i can remember right now) Pearl Jam - Ten Oasis - Definitely Maybe Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Beastie Boys - Ill Communication Rage Against the Machine (first album) Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles Dire Straits - Money for Nothing (compilation) Metallica - Black Album Iron Maiden - Fear of The Dark Nirvana - Nevermind Matchbox 20 - Yourself or Someone Like You INXS - The Greatest Hits (compilation)
Good album. Would have been on my list if it wasn't for the fact that Testify is IMO the only real stand out song for me. Not like Rage Against The Machine where every song I can recite at a moments notice and go insane for
Awesome lists so far. I've loved at least one album from everybody's lists. RCHP's Californication is rather awesome. I don't think they've made a better album besides Blood Sugar Sex Magic. TINLTL by the Foo Fighters was the first FF I ever listened to. My mom bought it and I remember borrowing it. Definitely my favorite album from them. Coldplay has fallen upon hard times. While I loved AROBTTH and X&Y, I do agree that they have jumped the shark. Viva la Vida seemed to start that trend. Nice to see Neutral Milk Hotel. Very unique sound that was pretty influential to music now. My roommate actually saw them live not too long again. Said they put on a great show. RATM's first album has pretty high music fidelity. It was recorded so well that people assembling PA systems actually use that album in order to make sure all the levels are correct. Maybe that's why Evil Empire sounded so rough. I've been listening to a ton of Pearl Jam recently. Ten was another album that I borrowed from my mom and loved. Vs. Is just as good, with Vitalogy being very close. Also nice to see Bill Withers getting some love.
I saw them live in May. Absolutely fantastic. I've got a collection of bootlegs from 1996 onwards and they were just as amazing as they were in the 1990's. Go see them if you get the chance.
Metallica- Master of Puppets Marilyn Manson- Mechanical Animals Beastie Boys- Ill Communication Run DMC- Any of the first 3 albums Slayer- Seasons in the Abyss Justin Timberlake- Futuresex/lovesounds Kid Rock- Devil without a cause (it was when I was in my late teens anyway) The Beatles- White Album Johnny Cash- American I-VI Radiohead- Ok Computer Oasis-Be Here Now
The Beatles - Revolver Modest Mouse - This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About 764-HERO - Get Here and Stay Built to Spill - Keep It Like A Secret Pixies - Surfer Rosa Flake Music - Spork e.p. The Shins - Oh, Inverted World the pillows - Runners High The Moody Blues - On The Threshold of a Dream Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary ^ Those are my most consistent, all time favorite albums. I've been listening to some other bands too, like Don Caballero, Slint, Melvins, Polvo, etc.
I keep thinking of more. Nine Inch Nails- The Fragile I left that off my list. Music was so much better when I was in High school....
No particular order other than number 1 and 2: 1)A Night at the Opera by Blind Guardian 2)Revelation by Journey 3)Defenders of the Faith by Judas Priest 4)Substance by New Order 5)Synchronicity by The Police 6)Moving Pictures by Rush 7)Battalions of Fear by Blind Guardian 8)Infinite by Stratovarius 9)Hemispheres by Rush 10)Rage in Eden by Ultravox
Thought I would throw on a few of mine now... Jimmy Eat World - Futures Absolutely breathtaking album. Can't tell you how many times I've listened to it. Every song is as good as the one before it. Head Automatica - either Decadence or Popaganda I've got a soft spot for Daryl Palumbo. Although Decadence is a more cohesive dance album, Propaganda is catchy, diverse and I actually enjoy Palumbo's exagerated syllable-emphasizing vocals Wolfmother - Wolfmother So good. Perfect mix of Zeppelin, Sabbath and a little Beatles. Another album that's pretty diverse while maintaining its hard sound.
1. Genesis - A Trick of the Tail 2. Marillion - Misplaced Childhood 3. Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning 4. Genesis - Wind and Wuthering 5. Jean Michel Jarre - Equinoxe
So I recently found out that Genesis is a polarizing band. I had no idea. Nice to see some older Genesis. They definitely took a lot of different directions whenever Peter Gabriel left. I like all Genesis, but it seems like they were figuring out where they wanted to go with the band. I still pop in Duke pretty often at work. Also yeah, everybody thinks music was better [insert time period here.] Nostalgia blinders, unfortunately. I find myself thinking the same sometimes as well and I need to remind myself to be timeplace-conscious.
This "music was better ages ago" is stupidity at it's very worst from people who don't attempt to listen to anything that isn't hugely mainstream. Hip hop isn't as good? Death Grips? Joey Bada$$, Lil B? yeezy? Rock isn't as good? Ignoring the remenants of the 90's and prior like Marilyn Manson, Swans etc who are still putting out great music [Swans latest album is like Rock album of 2014], or lesser known indie, folk etc like "Of Montreal" there are still amazing artists. Not even going to get further into this shit. It's just rubbish peddled by boomers who are upset that the entire world isn't worshipping dad rock or flat out overrated shit like the beatles. If you wanted to say that pop music, post 90's has been fairly awful, i'd agree and it's partly the reason why weird al wasn't that good on his last 2 or 3 albums before mandatory fun. The music was all flash in the pan and the albums would have a few tracks at best that didnt seem completely outdated. He nailed it with Mandatory Fun because there was a slew of good pop music that came along [Happy, Blurred Lines mostly for the catchiness and the backlash it received which made it excellent for parodying, timber, and all the songs on the Polka which usually arent bad at all etc, gangnam style] so everything is still fresh yet funny.
