I am sure back when OOT was released, my parents had it preordered for christmas for me, and when it came I am sure it was on a gold cart rather than the normal grey one released in europe. Wikipedia mentions that this happened, but gives no more details. How rare is this copy (which i daftly sold along with the rest of my N64 colection a while back), and how much is it worth? For clarification I am not talking about: -Any NTSC Zelda version -The australian OOT release, which was gold -Majoras mask, which was gold in europe Only the Zelda Ocarina of Time European Pal Version
didn't the first batch of european oots have golden carts? or a special edition? i am pretty sure there were golden ones, too.
Actual text for the curious: The first two Zelda games released for the NES had golden cartridges, rather than the standard grey-colored cartridges used for almost every other licensed game for the console. Keeping with the tradition, pre-ordered copies of Ocarina of Time were also golden. Also, the box cover had a thick, plastic card glued over the original cover. However, this was not the case in Europe where the game had a standard grey-cartridge owing to Nintendo of Europe (although there were actually some gold cartridges, they were only available very briefly). A possible incentive was an economic one, as standard grey cartridges are inexpensive compared to custom made golden models. It should be noted that Australia (which is, like Europe, part of the PAL region) had golden cartridges. Also, the sequel to Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, had a golden cartridge in Europe (and in the US). I'd wager it was probably the very first, intial batch and never any more. In reality I'd say it isn't worth any more than a grey cart. I bought my gold OoT off ebay not too long ago boxed for the same price as a grey one. I have managed to lose it though so I'm in the market for a new one.
Are you cetain it is a european version? From the cart you can tell by the product code - For example: Lylat Wars (PAL EU) - NUS-NFXP-EUR Baanjo Kazooie (PAL AUS) - NUS-NBKP-AUS From the box you can tell by the rating - aus has a G rating in white box on the front, whereas pal has nothing rating wise.
These gold carts for Zelda (the n64 games) were common as dirt in Australia at the 64s peak, I didn't even realise the rest of the world never saw them.
The only PAL golden OOT carts are australian ones, where they are almost as common as the grey ones in europe.
The NES Zelda's actually started out gray and were then made in Gold later after selling some huge amount of copies. OoT had a limited edition run which had a shiney box and gold cartridge, but more importanly the 1.0 revision which had some glitches later revisions didn't. I don't think any version of 1.0 is all that rare (usa, pal, japan). They made alot of them and N64 isn't exactly old or in demand.
I disagree fully,i bought Zelda OoT PAL Collectro's Edition here in France,on release day...they existed, and there are still many Gold Zelda OoT European PAL Carts..not AS COMMON as the grey ones though
and also, the PAL ones have another boxart, no red stripe at the right side of the cover. and btw, there is a gold version of oot pal. i swear
Grey cart before gold one for nes zelda's ? i'm very surprise , that the first one i heard that , the grey us cart comes with classic series and in europe only release on France but in player choice too so after the first release . Do you have a picture of a grey cart without the nes-zl-usa-1??? Same demand for the OOT - EUR gold if really exist , it can't be so difficult to have a picture showing a different version of the AUS one  . For me only the AUS exist , maybe nintendo of europe take some copie of the AUS ones to make a small special offer or something like that but i don't thinks they release a real european version.
Oh for the love of all things shiny! OK: NES Legend of Zelda and Adventures of Link carts were first released in GOLD. 99% of homes had GOLD cartridges. Later, they were re-released as a form of 'Best Seller' cartridge that was GREY (or GRAY if you're American). I repeat: The first release cartridges were GOLD, the later release was GREY. The Grey ones are far, far rarer than the Gold carts; however due to many believing that the Gold carts are rarer, the eBay value of a Gold cart is often greater than that of a rarer grey cart.
Are you sure? I remember seeing FAR more Grey carts at my local GameStop (back when they still sold NES carts) than Gold...
