Unfortunately this is a very expensive bit of kit but if you want your old consoles to look as beautiful as possible it's the price you have to pay. To be honest, the Framemeister is actually cheaper than some other up-scaler units and does a better job than them as well. It really is the only choice for the hardened retro gamer.

Sorry for the off-topic, but WOW! If only I had the money..... This is really a good kit, and look at those scan lines...... It's almost as if these pics have been taken from a CRT TV!

I doubt the price will drop that much. The XRGB3 still cost a pretty penny.

Yeah I assume the price wouldn't change. Hence why I just hoped for easy availability for when I eventually have the money someday.

I see what you mean. The XRGB3 can still be found at a price but it's not as easy to track down as it once was.

No problem at all. The only issue I've found and all up-scan converters suffer from this, is when you are playing a game that changes resolutions. For example, Dead or Alive on the Saturn runs in high resolution when playing the main game and title screen but the loading screens and character select are in standard 240p. So up-scan converters need to adjust the scanning when the resolution changes. This takes a few seconds meaning in Dead or Alive's case, you loose the first few seconds of every 1st round. A real pain in the arse. Still, not many games change resolutions during gameplay so it isn't really a major issue.

So in the opinions of those that have used one of these, does this make CRTs for gaming completely obsolete? Or would you say CRTs still produce a better picture on certain consoles?

I'd say they are better than a CRT because unless you own a broadcast level monitor the avarage family CRT won't look anywhere near as sharp as the Framemeister. I was brought up on RGB and high quality CRT screens so I know what a good CRT inage looks like but honestly, I can say the framemeister looks much sharper. Plus you have a bigger screen and no need to have a bulky CRT in the room.

Friend has one and its super nice but to save some $$$ I got a 32" sony triton crt off craigslist for $60 and yes it weighs a ton but the genesis and n64 look great using rgb to component converter. Other nice thing is the tv actually has a digital tuner so I watch regular tv in the bedroom/gameroom whenever.

Yeah, I'm in a very similar boat. I've been on the fence about buying one of these for ages...but part of me keeps wanting to see what their next one will be able to do. Regardless though that's awesome that you've been able to provide these to the community for that much cheaper!

As with all tech you will be waiting for the next one but in the case of Micomsoft's XRGB series they take their sweet time. The XRGB-3 came out 6 years before the Framemeister. 6 years is a very long wait. The release between the XRGB-2 and XRGB-3 was also pretty long. The price doesn't really change either. I guess Micomsoft knows they have great hardware so the charge for it :( Sad I know but quality always comes at a price I'm afraid.

Man, if I could get someone to buy my XRGB2 to partially fund this, I would be all over it.

The retail price is crazy. Even though this fellow's offer is a lot less than other sources. Can't believe no one from outside Japan hasn't struck an export deal with Micomsoft to import them to NA or EU.

The price does seem crazy but then you look at the other high end up scan units and find Micomsoft do sell at a good price. There are many problems up–scan converters on the market that are far worse than the XRGB series yet cost twice as much.

Yeah, but in another 5 years I'll be looking to move and not wanting to take a 36" CRT with me, so I'm hoping they keep with their 6 year plan. I can't promise I won't impulse buy one though >.>

It takes sound in if you use the RGB IN port from SCART? Can Dreamcast VGA go into the D-Terminal? I wouldn't think so RGB vs. D-Term/Component.
