Yeah, as I quoted from carmack, is not always about graphics but also the artist involved in the creations of the games. About nextgen graphics I wouldnt be so sure, since there's more complaints about the lack of a real step over the last gen. About revo, my main concern right now is that the remote doesnt works as they say, or that people feel it's cumbersome and goofy, and thus refuse to use it (that would be a bitch, since is the best innovation we've all seen in a while)
I would'nt go as far as to call the revolution an XBOX. I know the specs may seem low, but I am quite confident that the end result will be higher than what people expect purely from comparing numbers. Zelda:TP does not look next gen by the way, take your time and go through some screenshots where there's intense fogging, low poly models and a bad dose of blurry textures. RE4 is technically superior to my eyes, although I recognize the fact that the two engines aim at totally different goals, with the TP engine aiming at seemless and expanded landscapes as opposed to "small-box" areas where more detail is allowed.
But those "problems" you name arent that hard to solve with more power. Fog and lowpoly both can be solved by just increasing the distance drawing and detail on models. Textures well is tricky, because one thing is low-def (something the revo has too) and another is lack of VRAM, which as the fog issue that can be fixed.
As simple as what you mentioned might sound, the fact that only relatively recently the specs have been finalized is a good enough reason not to rush a graphically improved version for launch day. The systems may be similar, but I doubt that they ll sit on the same abstraction layer so debugging of the title would take considerable time. I would like to believe that the title is already complete and is just sitting there for launch, and perhaps being localized for all territories. I am really curious to see if they ve enabled the revmote control feature in the whole of the game, or just special parts of it. An Ocarina-type fishing mini-game would be ideal , as well as rowing your boat , and swinging your sword or throwing your boomerang, but the C-stick camera work would be tricky to transfer to the new controller setup.
Yeah, if ninty does it I'm sure the release may end up being rushed (with all the errors that it may contain) and a series of patchs would come to fix those problems. That would be critical, since as far as I know nintendo didnt said anything about the analog accesorie being included, much less the controller adapter (the one that looks like a GC pad with a VMU port). In this case the only way would be switching controllers when necesary...
