Honestly all this talk about 1080p is starting to sound like "My dick is bigger than yours" I might be wrong but half of the world still doesn't have TV's with 720p support. let alone 1080p... I wish we could go back to the early 90's, when gaming was supposed to be fun... And you didn't have to be rich to play games.
You have said it. This pretty much summarises my opinion on the matter of this generation's console war. And yes, Sony keeps copying Nintendo. Looks like a desperate situation to me. I really loved the PlayStation when it came out, but really, today I shall raise my glass and drink to the possibility of Sony crumbling, falling apart, and never coming back to the games market.
Wait dont you remember the SegaCD? or the NeoGeo? Those were pretty expensive at the time, specially if you look at inflation numbers over minimal wage.
I'm not protecting any company here. The problem is that Sony continues to be one of the most arrogant companies in the world. Everything they make has to be the standard, or is the best choice, and so on... Blu-ray x HD-DVD, 1080p, Downloadable content,... Damn, gaming was fun before all this. PS: Have you guys heard that Sony will charge for demos on the "PlayStationNetwork" ? Honestly, it's doesn't get more stupid than this...
Indeed:nod: Heh, if we were in a nintendo forum you'll be hearing the phrase "shut up infidel!" by now. And people think muslims are crazy. They havent seen the ninty fanboys and their reality distortion field yet...
Hmm, you have a point that's for sure  I'm just getting fed up with bloody PlayStation and their bulldoser way of doing everything. Maybe it's different in the west but that's the impression I get over here. Yakumo
Johnny & Yakumo that is exactly how I have felt since 2nd gen of ps2 only titles i have enjoyed on ps2 (other than resident evil) was the devil may cry series.
But thats what happens when a small market grows to this point. VGs are now a major part of the entertainment industry and with the downfall of both movies and music is sure it will be the one right after TV. I doubt any other company would act different to sony. In these last years they are becoming both arrogant and stupid, but thats normal bussines with any company that reachs an almost total market penetration.
I dunno, as I have said before, the Sony hate in this forum gets very old fast. Sony are arrogant and they deserve a good kick-in (metaphorically speaking) but how is their copying of other companies a bad thing, if you actually think about it? I will likely get all three machines in time, but it certainly suits me if the PS3 offers extra options rather than limiting itself. How the fuck is having emulators built in, downloadable content, motion capturing joypads, etc etc a bad thing? It simply isn't! One good thing about Sony is it takes novel ideas and makes them work for the mass market. Now, I don't like everything Sony does, but I can see that they shape the market in positive ways and I think having them in the gaming world is a good thing for the most part - they have opened up gaming to the masses and allow publishers and developers to make money. Sure, the games industry is full of genric "me too"s, but innovative games designs do exist and are released and the games industry has always been the same. There have always been crappy games, many licensed products and so on, from the Atari to the NES, SNES, Megadrive, and so on. Also, as someone has already said, we are seeing directly how having multiple machine formats benefits us. Competition is benefiting us in big ways and forces everyone to work harder for us. It's a win/win stituation. The only bad thing about Sony imitating so many system ideas is that we are likely to see a lot of ports. Ports work for some games but I think it encourages laziness in development studios and limits games to the lowest common demoniator. I'm sure we will see Dead Rising appear on the PS3, and we'll see (and are already seeing) PS3 games moving to multi-format development. No doubt they will be nice, but they won't push their respective machines too hard.
I don't doubt the PS3 will be a capable machine. My problem is it's the same old same old with higher tech specs and a higher price tag to go with that. It's just not that interesting. PS2 had alot of good games available for it, but it was just one of many platforms capable of those games. The only reason they appeared on PS2 was because of popularity. Many of those though never were released in Notrh America cause SCEA sucks ass. PS3 will have some good advantages if a game is developed specifically for it which is a change. But if a game isn't designed purely for it, it's not going to have any more shine than a 360 which is cheaper and I already have. Another thing is that the PS3's advantage in graphics to some extent can be completely ignored. They really are just shiney graphics that you will become dulled to in time. The Cell processor I guess could be some advantage for a game that needs that much raw processing power, maybe. PS3 would work well if it were priced better. But it's a higher priced item that offers much of the same. I don't expect their success to be anything like their previous ones. Wii is the only system thats offering something different and new. PS3 and Xbox only offer something new in the way that higher tech specs allow such as bigger enviroments, more characters, etc which are nice but both offer that.
It's also important to understand the nature of big business in general before getting up any one company. Big businesses are, in general, risk averse. They answer to shareholders (by law) and they must do everything in their power to increase the market value of the company (by law). In general this involves making sure that every move they make is a "sure thing". Google has been the exception to this rule, but when this company becomes really huge, I expect that they will also wind back innovation in preference to safer bets (the shareholders will not be prepared to gamble the company's future for the sake of limited additional returns). Nintendo is in a unique situation because it has been forced to be innovative because they can't complete in a market that is simply more powerful and has more resources than them. The DS was far from a sure thing, and it happens to have paid off. The Wii may also, but we should never forget the risk that if the DS had performed badly in the marketplace, there would likely be no Wii, and potentially no Nintendo (as a hardware manufacturer). That's a big gamble for a company like Sony or Microsoft to make, and they're in the enviable position of not having to make it (yet). It is standard business practice to let other less risk-averse companies break the new ground, then come in over the top of them. For every 10 innovative ideas that come around, only a couple of them usually amount to anything more than a curiosity.
Exactly. SCEA sucks. PS2 online content is very limited, but they simply killed all stuff avaiable on it, by not releasing the BB Navigator. Plus they took a century to release the HDD and killed it in 6 months. I'm glad there are hackers out there. Because of them i didn't had to buy FFXI + a 40GB HDD for $100. Instead i got a normal 80GB HDD and installed not only games, but DivX videos, mp3, plus i can store all my memory card saves on it (plus having them all also on a pendrive). I thank to all people that developed HD Loader, SMS Media Player and uLaunchELF. It showed how SCEA are a bunch of incompetent people.
The HDD was like what the broad band adaptor for dremcast was to sega of america, they simply didnt know what to really do with it or how to market it. Part of the reason was scea fear of the hdd being used for piracy. So alot of game that used it in japan had the feature stripped out of their US equivlent. By the time they realsed it, there wasnt any game that really took advantage of it other then RE outbreak. So it pretty much just died after that. As for online, it faild on ps2 the same reason it faild on game cube, little or no support for it. 3rd parties had literlly no service to work off so it was up to them to come up with their own structure. As for sony making ideas appealing to the mass market, online shows thats not always the case. However I agree this competion is causing a recent spurt of good games to emerge. Microsoft has really put a huge effort with 360 compared to xbox 1 and it so far has paid off benefiting the consumer to a large extent. Hell its made online a stable for consoles now.
