It seems we can look foward to 2d goodness again! SNK has previously announced Metal Slug Anthology, a Wii game which will make use of the unique remote controller. There are also plans to develop a sixth instalment in the Metal Slug series - but it won't necessarily appear on all next-gen consoles. "It's a 2D game so we can't bring it to PS3 or Xbox 360 as is," Herman said. "Quite possibly it will come to a Nintendo system because Nintendo is certainly does not have a high-definition requirement, but we're still analysing our plans for that." (source game informer)
Just because something can produce Metal Gear Solid 4, creators should not be denied to make simple (or even complex) 2D games. That's just forcing people to put up with 3d generic crap so "high definition" can come close to having a valid reason for existence in gaming.
I haven't got anything against 3D or HD. I m against the aggresive way by which companies try to feed people the idea that 2d games are "old", in the same manner they try to artificialy impose HD as a prerequisite to a good game (Visually). EDIT: I point to Conker on XBOX compared to some X360 games in HiDef.They don't offer nearly half the eye-candy that title has to offer at EDTV.
Sorry not your comment... "Quite possibly it will come to a Nintendo system because Nintendo is certainly does not have a high-definition requirement, but we're still analysing our plans for that." Is it because of the high-definition requirement (resolution and so on) or because the games have to be 3D....
Metal slug 2D + 1080P = win. Can you imagine all the stuff you could have going on in it? Not only tons of monsters/enemies but the viewing space!
I don't mean to be righteous, especially since I can't even begin to afford a 360 right now, but I will not buy a 360 or PS3 until this outrageous ruling against 2D games is rectified. I understand that it's important for marketing that these consoles look new and cutting edge in every way, but 2d fighters and shmups are without a doubt still relevant.
$5 the issue is because of microsoft's requirement for games to be in 720p at minimum & snk is too lazy to update their game. Shit, most xb360 live arcade games are old 2d games.
Would be nice if Wii became the main platform for 2D game releases in Japan though, it could take over the role of Dreamcast and PS2, although I doub PS3 will see a dramatic change in releases... Small developers like Triangle Service, G.Rev, Milestone,... will be able to do more with less on Wii though.
Why can't SNK take their heads out of their ass and just support Xbox Live Arcade? Thats what its there for. Microsoft would be more than happy to support SNK's catalogue on it. Ah well, good news for the Wii at least! I look forward to Twinkle Star Sprites Wii.
I can state, without a doubt, that Microsoft does not have any problem with 2D games appearing on the Xbox 360. Anyone saying otherwise is misinformed. What Microsoft *does* require is that all games run at a minimum resolution of 720p. -hl718
As already posted in one of the comments above, SNK/Playmore has to quit being lazy and just update their games with crispy high-def sprites. Et voila problem solved. I don't mind seeing a new metal slug episode in highdef but 2D gameplay (and graphics).
lol. sorry but anything Ben Herman sais should be taken with a pinch of salt. actually make that a whole bag of salt.
I wouldn't mind seeing alot of 2D games come out for the Wii. Esspecially classic arcade games like Metal Slug, KoF, Street Fighter, etc. And use the Classic controller too. None of that Wiimote shit for classic 2D games.
Keeping in mind that Sony of America is the one that shunned all the 2D games, while Sony of Japan welcomed them with open arms. Japanese PS2 was leaps and bounds over the competition for retro games. Sony's stance this time around remains to be seen.
