What do you like better 2D or 3D? Personally, I like 2D much better. Now, I am not saying 3D is crap and that I don't play 3D games, but I just like 2D much better. I have recently started collecting Sega Saturn stuff because I have heard it is the ultimate 2D machine. I have had a US saturn for a few years now, and I just got myself a Japanese Saturn, so I hope the Saturn can live up to my expectations. So, what do you think?

depend of the type of the game .
a fps is far better in 3d....
but for fighting games, 2d is the best.

for the most of types, i love more 2d.
and like you , i don't say that 3d is bad , 3d open doors to more complexity.
but 2d is simple , intuitive and open door to imagination, more than 3d.

As cahaz said, it depends on teh type of game.

    I can't stand the 3D versions of Castlevania, they all play horribly.......but I also can't stand the 2D version of Half-life ^_^

They are both good in their own way :)

2D and 3D both have their place, but what bothers me is the lack of 2D games in development. It's unfortunate to see how the lineup of the current consoles are virtually devoid of any original 2D titles.

indeed , the have their places.
but develloper don't think about 2d anymore.... and i can't understand why . oh ,yes.... because now , 'its all about power , not gameplay.

I agree that some games do have to be 3D, like first person shooters, but like Alchy and Cahaz said there just are not many 2D games released anymore. I wold like to see a 2D Mario game on the GC, one similar to Super Mario World on the SNES.

yes , they could creat the bigest mario adventure in 2d , now with dvds.

    could be really cool!

(personaly , i'm not fan of the last mario gc adventure , but the n64 one rocked!)

  10. Just to throw in my 2 cents: Mario 64 was the only great 3D Mario (aside from Seven Stars, of course) ever made. Sunshine was ass, mainy because I did not like the stupid storyline they made up for it. That's definately reaching for ideas, there, but maybe I'm just too much of a purist. Those of you who would like to see a new 2d (well, sorta) Mario, check out The New Super Mario Bros. for the upcoming DS. Methinks it looks interesting.

    I wanna see a 2d FPS! :smt043 :smt043

Personally, I like the GAMEPLAY that 2d games sport - no messing with camera angles or lock-on systems, just pure fun. Games featuring 2d play with 3d graphics, like R-Type Final or Ikaruga, for example, are very good in my book. And of course, there are some things - FPSs for example, that can't really be done well in 2D. I've always placed gameplay over graphics and stuff like that tho, which could explain my preference towards 2d (or things like why I play Family Stadium on the PC Engine for hours at a time). I'm not saying that 3D sucks or is bad - some of my favorite games, like FFVII or Animal Crossing or Sin And Punishment are 3d, I just like the 2d style of things a little better. If that makes sense.. :smt017

im havin a lot of fun with Zelda : 4 Swords on the GC.. even singleplayer, the new gameplay mechanics are, imho, excellent.. little more linear than the other 2d zelda games, but the puzzles and level design are great.. i'd definitely like to see more excellent 2D games come around; 3D is cool, but developers need to realize, it's not a requirement.

either is fine. game mechanics and balance are more important.

XIII was sort of a 2d / 3d hybrid fps and it pulled it off nicely. I was going to buy it christmas 2002, but it was mysteriously delayed close to launch untill christmas 2003 ... suffice to say the game was quite good, but it could have been much better considering they had an extra year to work on it :smt017

yes, its wasn'T a mario , it was poor....with a cheap story , and too many story. mario don't have story , or if they do, it's very simple just like mario 64 , there's no fmv scene and that's great like that ( oh yeah , one a the star and one at the end , but that's not complicated at all.) like great saint louis said , mario sunshine s*ck in a way.
and if they do an other mario, please no other (bad) story.

yeah , that was game is all about . but new ''gamer'' don't see it that way. and compagnies seems to heard their voices.

    i never played paper mario (yeah , i should , i know...)
    but wasn't it a a-rpg? not a platform game?

  18. 2D every time. The thing that puts me off about 'proper' 3D games is the camera. After all this time, only 3 games have managed a decent controllable 3D camera - Mario64, Zelda: OoT and Zelda: MM.

And some games are best left in 2D - Sonic is one example. Mario and Zelda did go into 3D very well tho.

There are lots of other 3D games I really enjoy: JetSet Radio, Pilotwings, Starfox, Headhunter etc... But for me, I'm a 2D oldskool platform/shmup gamer. 3D backgrounds in a 2D game are cool tho.

I'd also really love a GC Mario World syle game with, say, 15 worlds and 200+ levels.

3D has it's place - on a DS. Mario 64 and Zelda:OoT time on the bus. Ahhh yeah :smt023

Hmm...Only if they release them at £10 each. I'm not paying £20+ for games I already own twice (N64 and GC bonus discs). Now, if they were to use the MM engine and make a new game I'd be ecstatic :D
