http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/events/e32006/articles/20060507-hddvdexplained.htm Now confirmed. Now i wonder how long before the drive will be working on PCs. Also cant wait till a HDMI/DVI adaptor comes out for the console. Paulo
But are they going to sell it as somekind os addon like the SegaCD? what about newer X360s? will HDDVD be included or we'll have to buy the addon too?
How are they going to regulate the software if a sub-section of users will be running effectively limited systems?
"This much anticipated accessory" sounds very external and seperate to me. Although the design could be attached to the 360 or a seperate unit uith a usb cable. I am just interested in how this dinky little add-on is going to look at the moment. I like the idea of another mini 360 sitting next to my vertical console. Kinda like the ext PS2 HDD, which I still think looks really cool. I also hope that you can use it to play game discs, if they fit it with stabalizers that is. I hate the idea of any of my games getting scratched. Also it could be a cheap way of extending the life of the 360 by using the HDDVD module for games and taking the strain of the main laser that can't be replaced without considerable hassle.
Think about it. MS doesn't have to worry about the current user base. By the time the new and improves 360s comes out, all the current x360s would have overheated and died.
I don't really see a huge market for this. If it's internal, then people feel they're getting functionality "free" with the console. If they have to pay extra, when it can plays DVDs already, it just doesn't seem worth it. It's presumably going to be pretty expensive, too. I don't see any direct price in that article but they're talking about stand-alone players costing $500. If it's anywhere close to that then nobody's going to buy it.
It might make the drive a lot cheaper using the hardware in the 360. It could be just an optical drive, and all emulated hardware (which would be complete garbage) But you could theoretically see a $99 hd dvd add on .
400US dollars + 99 for HD-DVD, that's about the price of a Ps3 more or less - and I know many people who'd go for the second one if the price is gonna be that close. Add-ons have a bad history, apart from the recent global (and relative) success of the GameBoy player (in my opinion). The 360 is a sexy machine, although quite bulky. I wouldn't wanna imagine it ever more bloated or tied around an external player with a rope. Someone mentioned Dreamcast DVD. Has there been a topic here before on it? any pictures/protos/etc? EDIT: the article says: This new accessory will connect to the Xbox 360 console with a USB cable, enabling it to harness the power of the Xbox 360 console for the HD video outputs and digital surround sound. Now we're talking ugly.
It's already working on PCs, one at least: the Toshiba Qosmio. I've never actually seen one of these, but I'm pretty sure that it has been released. An HDMI/DVI adapter? If you really wanted that, couldn't you get the VGA adapter and a VGA to DVI connector?
I'd never buy it. HD dvd titles first released are mediocre. I mean, doom? Who the hell wants that. Give us some remastered classics.
There probably will be eventually. I mean, I'm not gonna shell out $500 for an HD-DVD player, but $100 or something for an accessory that will play them sounds like a pretty good deal. I hope it isn't external though: it would be a pain in the ass trying to transport your Xbox 360. Maybe an attachment like the Sega CD was.
Behold! The HDDVD attachment! The disc is harnessed by the power of the snowman, which are connected by high speed usb 1.56. You need HDMI though.
From IGN: 12:20pm: After the Viva Pinata demo ends Marketplace talk starts. It provides users different ways to purchase games. The Fight Night demo helped to increase EA's game sales by 5 times. There will be downloadable TV content ready this week including a Gears of War docudrama that starts on Live and finishes on MTV. The HD DVD player is shown and it is about 1/3 the size of an Xbox 360. It will be ready this holiday season.
