Due to the 360 design i cant see them making something that fits into the 360 as well as the sony external HD did. that said i dont think that looks too Bad. http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/xbox360/hd-dvd/03.jpg Whats the weird cover thing on the backside here? Edit: Its a space to plug the xbox wifi addon as you cant use it with the hd-dvd pluged into the usb port on the back of the 360. http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/xbox360/hd-dvd/01.jpg
I can't see the point of demonstrating a HD DVD drive add-on until the format actually takes off and has some decent titles. Until that happens there is no point in owning the add-on - all it is going to be used for is playing movies afterall.
Then the same can be said for blue-ray. Fine its going to allow for larger discs but its nothing much more then a game that comes on 2 dvds.
From IGN Boards: Source: http://boards.ign.com/xbox_360_general_board/b8266/117203905/p1/?10 Comparison: PS3 "Premium" 60GB SKU @ $599.99 + tax(if applicable) VS Xbox360 Premium 20GB SKU @ $399.99 + WiFi @ $99.99 + HD-DVD add-on @ $199.99 + tax (if applicable) to match a PS3, the "upgraded" X360 would cost ~ $700+ without games, would be about 40GB HDD less, and lack 1080p support. People should be grateful for Sony ...and I'm definitely picking up a playstation 3 at launch. *Concura
Your points regarding a future HD video player are correct. But consoles are mostly about games, and 600 dollars for a game console is kinda rough, and I don't care if it even bakes cake.
you'll also be able to bake cakes with the PS3. What you don't know is, underneath the hood of that system is actually a George Foreman grill. enjoy *Concura
My main point is that for most gamers, the price of the 360 is high enough as it is, so having an option not to buy the HD player might come as an economic relief to many players who are after HD gaming. With the PS3, you get good value, no doubt, but want it or not you get things that you wouldn't otherwise want to pay for. (assuming you're a casual "poor" gamer)
I knew ith: Seriously, the only developer who had a complaint for the lack of HDDVD in the X360 was square becos they just love to add CG FMVs everywhere.
Thats a fair point, But only if you must have wifi and some form of HD film support. Personally I'm not interested in either, and as such would go for the 360 anytime. That also doesn't take into account the high probability of an Ms pricedrop right before the ps3s launch, nor the fact that the $200 price has mysteriously been pulled...
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20060511/xbox07.htm Good pic of the HD-DVD drive, deeper than I thought. Ah the gray. Though I do think MS has missed a massive chance here - Little faceplates just for the Hd drive!
I wonder if it connects to a PC via USB and appropriate drivers. The HDCP security is not transferred with the USB, but is presumably found in the 360's AV cable. If someone is able to connect it to a PC then they can probably dump an HD movie in HD quality and play it back without the HDCP crap, on a PC :020:
It will be encrypted data on the disc, so will not show unless the PC has HDMI also. HDCP verifies every piece of hardware in the chain, if it finds a problem, back down to 480p.
Still, I'm sure it's crackable. Every kind of protection gets cracked in the end, e.g. DVDA and now even SACD (since some hardware players downsample it to 88.2kHz PCM before outputting, and this can be intercepted and captured)
Of course. If it can be seen it can be turned into a clean video signal, if it can be heard it can be turned into a clean audio signal. DRM is a losing battle from day 1.
Yeah the thing is so far HD-DVD releases dont do that. They have opted out. However Microsoft better come up with a way for the future releases which will soon be HDCP only due to piracy will work with the drive. (i hear at least one big studio is making their releases HDCP only already) Same goes for sony even though the lower model might be able to play films at release i see many studios moving to HDCP only releases. If this happens it will render the PS3 low end model useless as a media player. I wonder if MS will be able to release a DVI/HDMI cable that supports HDCP with the current box on the market.
The low-end model doesn't have hi-def outputs anyway though, right? So presumably everything is being rendered internally in high-def and then converted into low-def analogue signal. No reason to assume this wouldn't happen to blu-ray discs as well.
