You know why this is significant? Because a Microsoft console sold more than a Sony console, in Japan(!). Who cares about the other stuff, this just happened. Who would have thought this would happen at the beginning of this console war? Not me.

We are talking about Consoles, the top 5 best RPG sellers this year have all been on handhelds.

DS Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon - 1.03m
    DS Pokemond Diamond / Pearl - 1.00m
DS Dragon Quest Monsters Joker - .85m
PSP Crisis Core Final Fantasy - .73m
DS Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings .53m

The best selling games of 2007 so far have been Wii Sports 1.59m and in 2nd place is Monster Hunter Freedom 2nd with 1.37m

Not been a great deal RPG wise released on proper console that has managed to sell over 100,000 units...

I don't think so, the Xbox 360 has been around now since 2005 and sales have been miserable to say the least. Number of Xbox 360 games to sell over 100,000 this year? None! The Xbox 360 has got two games that have sold over 100,000 units. Blue Dragon with a just over 200,000 units sold and Dead or Alive 4 with just over 100,000 units sold.

The PS3 isn't that much better but three games sold over 100,000 units this year. Minna No Golf 5 managed over 350,000 sales this year and so did Gundam Musou (over 280,000 sales) and Bladestorm over 110,000 sales.

Hmm well next week we release the 40gb machine and some people will be holding off on that and Microsoft being scared drop the price of the 360... To be honest I don't think Sony will be losing any sleep. If the Xbox 360 recorded high sales (ie over 80,000) then I would be worrying if I was Sony but saying 'Yay we've overtaken the Sony PS3 in sales for a week after a price drop and agressive bundles and with Sony launching a new machine next week and our sales increasing nearly 550% from 3,000 to 17,000 which is still shit compared to the sales we were doing when Blue Dragon was around....' doesn't sound as good.

On Sunday walking around places like Sofmap I still saw more people buying 40gb PS3s then I did people just buying Xbox 360 games...

Lost Odyssey should sell about 100,000 games this year, I can't see it doing much more then that.

Looking at the PS3 list I can see the following titles doing well...

    Winning Eleven 2008
    Gran Turismo 5 Proluge
    Time Crisis 4

Still we'll see. I'm sure the Xbox 360 will get another blip.

Well to some extent I think the point being made by some is being dramatized by those who don't agree with it. I don't think anyone here was trying to make the case that the 360 is the new king of Japan and will continue to beat the PS3. Some of us were just surprised to see it happen even if just for a week. I didn't know that the PS3 sold so poorly that it was even possible for Microsoft to overtake them with a brief spike in purchases.

I happen to think the 360 is a good gaming machine and I think the more people in Japan play it the more they'll like it. You can't tell me that Japanese people ignore the 360 just because of the FPS issue. That sounds similar to the claims that Ford sells to few cars in Japan because of quality issues. Garbage. If the Japanese have the impression that they are the best at making a certain product then they will almost always buy domestic no matter what their tastes might be. I'm sure there are plenty of Japanese people who like the Ford Mustang but just wouldn't buy it because they've been told that Japanese cars are best. It has nothing to do with the actual car at all, it's the mental barrier. Electronics/video games are the same.

Very true, but as it was Japan vs. Japan vs. Japan at that point, and as such I would consider a US console being big news.

Everyone knows that the European market is the battleground, because there are no entrenched stigmas to any console due to where it is manufactured (unlike the US and Japan IMO). I think that, sadly, that the issues being had with PS3s in Europe (poor number of games, quality of top titles, overall cost meaning that the cheapest PS3 is the same price as the Elite360) means that it's leeching back to Sony's home turf about people's disillusionment.

I do feel that Sony have rested too much on their laurels, and shovelled too much sh*t in people's faces to carve a lead worldwide, throughout the first year of this console despite having the more powerful and more stable platform. I really do feel sorry for the console's tech team.

Maybe because not many big RPGs have come out on consoles this year? I'm sure that has nothing to do with it... but you know.

Well, Ace Combat 6 and Halo 3 (oddly enough) might change that this year. I imagine Lost Odyssey will as well.

PS3s aren't selling that hot either, you seem to forget. Regardless, I think the big thing here is that the 360 (a US made console) is now doing better than the Xbox (a US made console), and that alone is grounds for Microsoft to be a bit happy. Its going to take a lot of work for them to make any kind of progress after the travesty that was the Xbox in Japan... but they're starting to make some ground and improve the image the original Xbox gave them. And thats the entire point, the 360 is improving in Japan. I know that scares PS3 people to no end since its pretty much the Sega Saturn (sales wise, certainly not game wise, so don't kill me Yakumo! :110: ) right now... but whether you like it or not, the 360 is doing better in Japan than the Xbox did. Thats it. Thats all I'm really trying to say.

Half a million people own 360s in Japan. I'm pretty sure Lost Odyssey, which isn't going to be a "kiddy" RPG like Blue Dragon is often written off as being, is going to sell a bit more than 100,000 copies.

Once again, I imagine the 360 will pick up steam once Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, and Ninja Gaiden 2 are out. Though if MS doesn't keep that stream of good games going, the 360 will undoubtedly fall flat on its face. They just gotta have another year like this one and they will continue to improve.

In 4-5 years time it will be quite different, I am sure. The first few years of last generation were pretty lame too.

Except for the Xbox and Halo. Say what you want, but it was a great game, that sold a lot of consoles.

I just don't agree...I've played more games this gen then last one...360 just has too many fun games, combined with online and friends I have a ton of fun lately...of course, this all depends on tastes.

Over use of normal maps give me a massive headake.

Seriously I can't play oblivion or Kameo because after 10 mins, it feels like someone was hitting the temples on my head with a hammer. It's seriously bad.

Truthfuly, SMG is the only reason I wish I still had a wii as it's the platformer I want to play the most.

I personaly think it sucks SMG did not sell even better. No fooling our selfs, 300k is super duper fantastic for any game to achieve but this is mario. I exspected the wii version to do better.

It's still got time. It'll probably sell consistent amounts of copies throught the lifespan of the Wii.
