...300k sounds like a right result bearing in mind Mario Galaxy is merely Mario 64 in space, hardly groundbreaking for Mario.

the only similarity with Mario 64 is that they re both 3d platformers. Mario 64 is actually much like Zelda and even Grand Theft auto by the same coin.

Galaxy has done things no platformer did before and in this day and age of aging formulas (FPS on the 360 for example) Galaxy is really something new and exciting for platforming lovers. It gets one thinking in brand new ways.

Mario Galaxy is a better game than 64, it's more fun, more nostalgic, more power-ups and has more varied platforming.

I think we all need to realize that the wii's huge numbers point towards its' mass appeal and as we all know, the mass does not always appreciate the classic gaming franchises that we do.

I've got to agree with GP's comments, I just can't get excited about modern console gaming. Sure there are 'fun' games with appeal to the more modern set of playstation kiddies.. But there is a large sector of us that have been left behind because of our lack of desire to emulate modern pop-gaming culture. I'm not meaning to complain, as I realize that manufacturers go where the money is. I'm just saddened is all.

Someone needs to make a gaming medicinal Erectile dysfunction herbal spray(WTF) so I can keep it up for more than 5 seconds while I oggle the giant fake tits that are the current generation of games systems.

All form and no substance make jack a limp boy..

Honestly, the good games are out there for this gen, you just have to look. I'm really not into these newer games like COD4 and Bioshock and whatnot, but I have 25 excellent 360 games.

    Fun with numbers

Number of Wiis in Japan = Approx 3.8m, Number of PS3s in Japan = 1.35, Number of Xbox 360 = Approx .49m
Number of Mario Galaxy Sold week 1 = Approx .28m
Number of Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Sold Week 1 = Approx .18m
Number of Ace Combat 5 sold Week 1 = Approx .07m
So that is 1 in 13 Wii owners buy SMG and 1 in 7 PS3 owners buy SSM5 and 1 in 7 Xbox 360 owners buy AC5 (or 1 in 18 buy SSM5 on Xbox 360...).

Microsoft will never break into the Japanese market for the simple reason that it's not Japanese.

Japanese people won't buy it, 80% of the reason being that. Take a look around you in a Japanese electronics store, or someone's home. Notice something? Oh yeah, 90% of the stuff is Japanese. My entire classroom(in Japan) didn't even know Philips, my hostmother thought it was food(brilliant), one of the world's biggest electronics producers... C'mon.

Apart from a handfull of companies, the biggest which I can remember being Apple, Japanese people don't know and aren't interested in foreign brands.

You do realize that companies Levis, Puma, Nike, GAP, Starbucks etc. make an absolute killing here, right? Not to mention Hollywood movies do exceptionally well, despite the fact that "multiplexes" and similar theatres you could vacation in, for the most part, don't exist. At least not in the city (or very few, anyway).

    It's not b/c the products aren't Japanese.

Amen to that ! Yep, loads of overseas items are very popular in Japan. My entire kitchen set up is made of Tefal (France). Most of my clothes are none Japanese branded as well. All bought in Japan mind you.

The Japanese love western stuff "IF" it is appealing. The original XBOX most defiantly was not in games and appearance of the original console. Now the 360 does look sleek plus it does have better games that the Japanese would enjoy. I see the 360 growing stronger and stronger in Japan. It will never out do the Japanese consoles (well if Sony keeps fucking up you never know) but it will probably do better than any other non-Japanese system released in Japan I think.

Nice way to welcome the 40GB PS3 model. The PSP seems to keep selling quite well too.

I think it depends on the product. Some foreign items will not sell well in Japan if Japan is the world leader in it, in their opinion, which would include video games, electronics, cars, etc. That's probably why a high school kid has McDonalds once a week but has never heard of Motorola.

By the way, regarding the numbers above. Those are store sales or manufacturer sales?

when wii decreases it's price to 150eur in europe in a year (if nintendo did that know they would kill the present generation instantly),,, we can say GAMER OVER SONY AND MICROSOFT.

    face reality.

That is to be determined and I dont see it happening. Wii wont be dropping its price in the next 6 months. If it drops its price it will be to $200 but I still dont see that happening when it sells out in USA & Europe. Japan will probably pick up once Wiifit is out.

Wii also will not lead to game over for Sony or MS.

    I reiterate:
The games are on the 360. The PS3 has zero games. You can jump the gun all you want for these two weeks, but we shall see what happens when the 360 is still getting a constant flow of good titles and the PS3 is still getting jack shit that isn't on the 360.

Though my entire point was that this go round the 360 is doing much better than the Xbox, and that the 360 might prove to be somewhat successful for Microsoft in Japan. Where the 360 places in Japan is irrelevant, as it is thoroughly kicking that overpriced heater's ass in every other region. Care to bring up some US numbers? Software sales? Yeah, didn't think so.

What does US numbers have to do with your out of ass asumption about the 360 in japan? :)

360 will do better then xbox 1 but still will not be very sucessful compaired to other consoles (including ps3).

    -- edit --
Just a minor note. My 360 happens to be a japanese launch unit.

Does it actually matter how much something sells? It's not like the usual vidya game buyer is going to count towards which system is the best or whatever. I think almost all of those Wiis and PS3's sitting around don't have any games in them.

True that. I'd rather talk about the great games coming out on the consoles, rather than how well they're selling. If a console has awesome games on it, I'll buy it. I could care less how many people buy it in another country. Right now, 360 has the best games. Nuf said.
