So at work today they set up the 3D television demo.

It's a LED TV with powered 3D glasses.

now, it's functional like a normal telvision...
    and they had a demo

and at first it shows some stars, it shows some other crap, a moon, some rotating blocks yadda yaddya and you're like okay. yeah, that's 3D.

Then it shows a clip from Monsters vs Aliens and you're going "Oh hey, yeah I can see that."

THEN it uses a paddle ball clip from that movie to really emphasize the 3D and I couldn't help but say "ohshit!"

We're getting there ladies and gentlemen. Home Theater just got a step up.

    ...if you got 4 grand.

What some people spend on lousy NES games that 4 grand isn't much plus in a couple of years it will be much cheaper... now we don't need it anyway as there is nothing to use it with yet.

Sony PS3 will introduce an update to support 3D this summer already tho.... but available games that really make good use of it will take longer.

I don't see it working on the "real world". I mean, imagine a family of 4 people.

The TV will (probably) come with one 3D glasses. Then, they'll need to get 3 more. Blu-ray players will need to be 3D complient, HDMI 1.4, a.k.a. more expensive (and it's not like the Blu-ray has killed the DVD already, right?).

The PS3 will support 3D? Cool. You'll just need to get HDMI 1.4 cables and a brand new and expensive TV. hurray!

Add to that, the fact that most people consider 3D as a "gimmick". Actually, most people i know remember of the 3d glasses from the Master System and NES when they talk about it.

IMHO, this is just a hype. Blu-ray hasn't taken off like eletronic companies / movie studios thought it would (specially after the Blu-ray x HD DVD battle ended), FullHD tv's aren't selling like they should be... So they need a new "thing" to impact the market. Apart from the usual people that always get new stuff when it's first avaiable, i don't really see this being a success. No matter how impressive it is.

3D stuff for cinema? Great idea.

    For home use? Not really...

I see a Virtual Boy issue at a tsunami scale. Headaches go hand in hand with prolonged use. Wearing/taking them off all the time because the phone ringed etc doesn't seem really pleasant either..

I might be wrong of course but to be fair its more probable than not in my view that it will either flop or be sustained by a few

There's nothing sexier than a spontaneous moment of intimacy during a movie while wearing powered shutter glasses..

The point I'm trying to make here is that some of us do a lot more while watching a movie than just stare at the screen. I routinely send text messages, repair electronics, reference things online and on occasion fool around with an attractive woman. Until we have holographic emitters that require nothing more than the naked eye. I will steer clear.

Doesn't interest me at all. I guess I'll just have to keep waiting for the Holodeck to be invented.

the TV did have some slight lag, some slight blur but it was pretty cool still. the glasses when you look down at your phone and stuff look fine, they're higher end glasses than you use when you see Avatar for example, but the effect isn't as good. I suggest trying it out, i don't think it's a gimmick anymore. the general public has shown genuine interest in it (avatar for example) and the world cup this year is going to be broadcast in 3D. I give it a few years, it's not going to take off but it's definatly going to move past gimmick IMO.

we just got an LCD this year or last year, i forget. I have an LCD 480 TV I use in my room. I'm looking to get really nice CRT to replace it. It's not going to become standard for long ways away (if ever) but the technology is nice. We sold out of our first shipment - and the display went up yesterday.

As long as these 3d tv's will cost around the same price as normal led/lcd etc or a little more i don't see the problem.
How about the technology, is this something that is basically dont by software only? if so I don't see why it should be that expensive in the long run.

Would be nice to have one and activate 3d just when you feel like watching the occassional 3d movie/game.

I think the easiest answer is "Yes."

lol, the 3D is an option on these TVs. You activate it, other wise it acts as a normal TV. It's slightly higher than the cost of a normal LED TV, but once the price of the 3D hardware goes down I think it's safe to say most LED and LCD (maybe plasma) will just include the 3D hardware. Same with bluray players. At that point (which is roughly 3 years) the only ACTUAL expense will be getting the 3D glasses.

I don't think it's a software thing. I'll ask Friday when I go back into work.

I defiantly see this being a standard feature on new TV and bluray players. Of course it won't be the standard to USE it but the option will be there. Like I said, then the only real investment people will have to make is the 3D Glasses.

You won't NEED the special 3D enabled bluray player eventually because some HD Channels will be broadcasting things in 3D. Some people will get the glasses, have the 3D TV and ONLY use it for the super bowl or world cup for example.

the 4 grand I mentioned was the 1.4HDMI, the 3D Bluray player (Which aren't all that expensive actually.), the TV, and 2 pairs of 3D glasses and I believe the receiver and sub and speakers. i'm not sure about the sound system being included in that figure.

    update:

So, the two makers currently making 3D TV is Samsung and Panasonic. Mitsubishi's hasn't released their glasses yet, and neither have Sony.

Now, Samsung's glasses don't work on Panasonic's TVs and vice versa.

...today I stumbled upon something crazy. If you are within range of one of the TVs and look at the other, the glasses work in 3D.

o_O anyone want to take a stab at how that works? I think it has to do with IR emitter.

I think 3d are for the next console generation. The 360 for example have very low refresh rate in 3d. The ps3 can do it better but the biggest problem is hdmi 1.4 . For people wants HD sound, you have to buy an new 1.4 receiver too :banghead:. I dont like to watch 3d with stereo sound .
I wait for 3d TV generation without glasses and ps4.

I'm going to think nothing of it since I've sat through countless 3D movies on these new 3D TVs.

Hell, my wii gives me a giant warning when i turn it on and so does my DS.

    http://www.samsung.com/au/tv/warning.html

People most at risk are the same people at high risk of seizures from video games.

    http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wiisafety.jsp

go a head and compare the warnings lol. Some how, many news sites are adding "pregnant" people to "tired or drunk" to the list - despite it not actually being on samsungs website.

I'm buying a big new TV this year but will I be getting 3D? Will I bollocks! I don't want to sit there like a twat with glasses over my glasses. man, I look stupid enough now wearing a pair of dolby digital cans never mind them plus the over sized sun glasses. 3D TV will become a real must have item when you don't need the glasses. All it is now is the next big fad.

It's the same fucking thing nintendo (japan) and Sega already did with their 3D googles back in middle 80s.

So the technology is like 20 Years older than the LED TV itself.

The glasses must need some kind of synch to the TV.

Hey, it's no laughing matter. Watching too much 3D TV during the pregnancy may result in some sort of mutant child who can see into.... THE THIRD DIMENSIONNNNNNNN
