I was thinking about waiting for the Lite due to the buggy headache-inducing screen and the abysmal battery life, but the whole second analog bigass addon bullshit closed the deal for me.

Is not just "selling", it broke a record...

I wonder if buyers of first-iteration Nintendo handhelds will ever get tired of being fucked over.

Given that I've already put 100s of hours into my 3DS...

Not this time I won't be. Didn't really care with the DS either though. The only time the re-designs really mattered was like, GBA->GBA SP. The DSLite just brought a worse d-pad and a brighter screen, and the DSi just added some weird features that few would really care about.

So are you gonna get the add-on to make your 3DS as big as a Game Gear?

Na, the Circle Pad Pro isn't required of any games I'm interested in, and I doubt it ever will be.

I enjoyed RE: Revelations just fine without it, and am enjoying MGS3D just as well.

It's seriously the worst add-on I've ever seen. As far the design goes, the original 3DS isn't bad, but you'd better pray there won't be any games that interest you, unless you like paying for a redesigned system. Seriously, the only reason for the 3DS to not have a second analog stick is so they could sell a redesign...

I disagree. And all it takes is a second of actual thought to see why:

How many Nintendo games really need a second analog stick? Mario? Nope. Zelda? Nuh-uh. Pilotwings? Nope. Metroid? Touch screen worked fine for Hunters.

Kid Icarus will use the Circle Pad Pro, but that's really just intended for left-handed folks (which I am not).

So... what? Animal Crossing? Doesn't even need analog really. Mario Kart? Luigi's Mansion? Pikmin? Donkey Kong Country?

Why would Nintendo design their system around a feature they rarely use? It doesn't make sense.

Nintendo systems sell because of Nintendo games. That much is obvious. Therefore from Nintendo's view, it is on the 3rd parties to conform to the controller they make. In this case, they made the Circle Pad Pro, I presume out of the same panic that caused the price drop (and they made it specifically so they could get a Monster Hunter title). But do I see much of anything coming out that requires it? No. Do I think Nintendo is going to redesign the 3DS to include it? Not unless they change how they make games in the near future where they really want two analog sticks.

This has more to do with when it was released than anything else. All the other Nintendo consoles released at periods where the Christmas bump either was too far away to push them over the 5 million mark, or too close to christmas for it to make a significant impact. The 3DS benefited greatly in setting this "record" due to it's timing of launch.

Had the GBA, for example, launched when the 3DS did, it would have set this record easily (as it previously held the record anyways).

It's always been this way. You just been living in a hole. Infact this board is full of collectors who buy shit just because. Not that it's a bad thing. It just "is", and always will be(as long as there is money).

This logic is kinda flawed since, unless you wanna count the useless little C-stick on the GC controller, Nintendo hasn't actually had a system with a second analog stick. Now that the Gamegearifizer exists for 3DS, I wouldn't be surprised to see some Nintendo games that use a second stick.

I was commenting the fact that the 3DS had sold FIVE MILLION units.

This logic is kinda flawed since the Dual Analog controller concept was introduced in 1996 and Nintendo has obviously not cared about the concept enough to feature it dominantly in one of their consoles yet.

The 3DSlite is going to have the 2nd analog for one simple reason: COMPATIBILITY

Without it they have to release a new version of that fugly addon for the lite

Now, did nintendo launch a new light for the GBASP like they did for the GBA? or a battery port?

No, what they did is add the fucking light and rechargeable battery they left out of the original one

Is nintendo policy to launch crippled versions first, it makes the unit cheaper early on and gives people a reason to buy the new version

Compare that to Sega which removed the volume and headphones port of the Genesis on the MKII, and the auto-tray of the SegaCD

If they were nintendo it would be the MKII that had those features, not the MKI

The NES 2 removed the A/V ports

The SNES 2 removed the expansion port, making it incompatible with a few super famicom add-ons. It also removed the power LED and the RF port, and the multi-av out lacks the ability to output via S-Video, a feature the original SNES had.

The GBASP removed the headphone jack... on a goddamn portable. It also rendered several games that relied on tilt incompatible.

The GBA Micro removed Gameboy backwards compatibility.

So did the DSi. Which also meant you couldn't use the rumble pack nor the Web browser add-on cart.

The newest revision of the Wii removed GCN compatibility and the GCN controller ports

Don't even dare try to pretend like Nintendo doesn't cut corners with revisions. Every single company ever does it. It's the main point of a hardware revision - to cut costs.

And it's pretty much universally agreed that removing the disc tray from the Sega CD was a massive improvement, as the drive belt is prone to going out.

I just don't see Nintendo caring enough about the second analog to slap it on a re-design. If anything, I predict it winds up like the Rumble Cart on the DS, an obscure oddity that some games use but most do not. I mean come on, the damn thing is only being carried by Gamestop. Nintendo isn't exactly pushing it.
