Got my 3DS yesterday. I didn't care about being the first to get it so I didn't bother going to any of the midnight release. Hey I need my beauty sleep. Anywho, I'm surprised by how well built and how light it is. I really expected it to feel cheap and heavy (ala the phat DS). Unfortunately, because of how my brain processes imagery I can't see the 3D effect at all. It just a flat image with some shimmer, like those old holographic stickers. My brother tells me that its amazing however. I've turned of the 3d in the parental controls so I don't see the shimmer and don't have to deal with that silly slider.
I got my 3DS at Wal-Mart late Sunday afternoon just an impulse buy, went for milk and shout out stain remover.... Then bought a 3DS, pilot wings and steel diver(loved this when it was just a tech demo when DS launched). I forgot it was the launch day.. think it's my 1st launch day portable purchase. I love 3d. So I could not resist. The 3d is ok but the screen is not as good as the Fuji w3. Its good but the Fuji's is almost perfect. There is some ghosting on the 3DS and not just from extreme parallax settings. That cannot be correct(even with the slider almost down all the way), the Fuji w3 has zero ghosting. The 3d camera in the 3DS has nothing on the Fuji w3 that was almost a given. At lease they share the same picture format .mpo, sony has a free program on the ps3 to view those file on a 3d tv. I love the built in mini games the augmented reality game are cool and fun. I have converted some 3d movies to play on the fuji w3 I hope I can do the same for the 3DS this will better since it has support for headphones, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1281622 can't wait to test this out same methods should work I look forward to the updates to enable the web browser and some type of market place. The little red boot up screen is cool, in memory of the vr boy Now they could port vr boy,3d master system and 3d famicom games to run on this and add some cool updates.
I got it at midnight launch at walmart but there wasnt anyone there cept me and my friend and i got rayman
ha, I find the phat DS to be the most durable handheld i've ever used. I've had mine since launch and it's been through hell and still works 100% perfectly.
Can someone confirm this? Is there no new alternative? I loved me some Pictochat back when the DS first came out, I ended up using it a lot more than I imagined I would.
There's definitely no Pictochat, and I don't see anything else that looks Pictochat-ish. There are some features that aren't available at launch, but will be enabled later by a software update - the internet browser for example. One odd thing I've noticed about the 3DS in contrast to 3D movies is that you never seem to get used to it. Whenever I've watched a 3D movie, after 30 minutes or so I get used to the 3D effect and I sort of stop thinking about it. With the 3DS, I'm pretty much always aware of it. It could be due to the depth of the games I'm playing along with the fact that I have the 3D slider set to high. However, I think it's more likely that it has something to do with the lack of antialiasing. It gives a similar effect to that of looking through mottled (though very fine) glass. It's possible that that brings more attention to the 3D effect. Not really sure. I've been using it quite a bit, though, and so far no eye problems.
I've been the opposite of that. Even though I do prefer to play in 2D for sharper visuals. 3D does look really nice though.
My microphone crapped out, but my launch-day original DS was my ONLY DS until I bought the 3DS this past weekend.
I love my phat DS. It always just felt right in m hands compared to the DS Lite. I never wanted the DSi due to no GBA slot, and by the time I found the DSi XL interesting the 3DS had been announced. So far I'm loving the system though. Many of my friends get addicted to Face Raiders whenever they try out the system. Currently I have Rayman, and it's fun like I remember (the sky is definitely fucked up though). I'm almost 3/4ths of way through it though so I'm going to need a new game like SSFIV soon.
I see what you're saying now about the ghosting. It's barely noticeable in Ridge Racer 3D. Actually, I didn't notice it at all until you mentioned it. It's kind of sneaky how all of the menu items on the 3DS are mainly in the center of the screen. It seems Nintendo is aware of the problem and is trying to compensate for it.
I bought a DSlite day 1 on launch. That was a huge mistake. I hate the damn thing. I've already stated previously in other threads why I hate the DSlite. So I won't repeat myself. From what I've seen of the DSi it was a lot better than the lite. And I own an XL. It's really loud ala the Phat, has near perfectly saturated colors , however it is very large and the screens low resolution is a bit of a turn off at times. Combined with what seems the response time of the LCD depending on the game is not so great. After spending around 70 hours playing Soul Silver on it it's left a sour taste in my mouth, The 3D engine in that game turns to a mess of moving pixels when the screen scrolls and then you have very minor ghosting that if you notice it at all will hurt your eyes. And other games with 3D graphics that i've played don't look so great either. I'm thinking of selling it and buying a DSi But at this point I am also thinking i'll just sell it and use the money for other stuff and use my Phat to play DS games.
I got to see and play the 3DS tonight. It was kind of neat the way the 3D made it look like you were looking inside through a portal at things. I think you can get used to the effect as long as you don't slip out of the "sweet spot" for viewing. But ultimately it's a nifty gimmick. But hardly anything ground breaking. Though unlike the Virtual Boy this has more to it than a 3D gimmick.
^^ I think the 3D functionality will be a gimmick for MOST games and instrumental for SOME. IMO, Pilotwings benefits enormously, as would any game requiring very precise spatial orientation (i.e. Mario 3DS). Skilled developers will be able to incorporate this benefit as something you don't notice until you turn the 3D off. For something like Street Fighter or Rayman, which is just a port, it's of dubious value.
Thanks to Amazon and their crazy 10$ credit per qualifying 3DS game I wound up getting Ridge Racer 3D, Steel Diver, Super Street Fighter IV, and Rayman 3D for about $120. Now that should tie me over for the months until the next worthwhile release... hopefully they aren't as bad about that as they were with the DS and the Wii.
