Just released over here in Japan is what can only be described as a really dub idea, the 48 hour watchable DVD. No, this isn't a DVD at will play constantly for 48 hours but a DVD that can only be used for 48 hours. The DVD has a red dye on the bottom that slowly reacts with the air once exposed to it. After 48 hours the DVD player can not read the disc due to the red dye destroying the data. The DVDs come in an air tight plastic shrink-wrap type packing inside a magazine and cost 600 yen. Now the really dumb part about this is that you can rent the same DVD (normal DVD that is) for only 250 or 300 yen and watch it for a whole week before you have to return it or copy it Japan and it's sometimes pointless ideas Yakumo
They talked about doing this for a while (they -- meaning everywhere I think) but I always thought it was cost-prohibitive. Your report kind of proves that. Is the packaging at least fancy?
I would keep them in the air tight bag. You know, it might get rare someday, and people will be like "OMG, thats the last 48 Hr copy of Casablanca IN EXISTENCE!!! I'll sell my car for it! PLZ?!" :smt082
Actually I've been seeing those deteriorating dvds for a year or two now in various convenience stores and such. They tend to only be like $5, so nothing too expensive.
meh with the dvd market here it never catch on, like assembler said they had a divx player in which you bought this player, and the discs you had you had to pay a fee each time you wanted to use them, the idea was that even though you have the disc, youd rent to use it at home instead of going to the video store, but in the end it bombmed bad, even then no one really bought it and they said they were gonna have master discs that were unlimted but never happend, by the way fabrizo, what dvd titles have you seen that use this technology?
Hmmm, I think one of them was called 'Chicago' and I might have seen 'Forest Gump' as well, but I never paid attention to the titles available, it was more of a "Wow, I can't believe they actualy used this technology" sort of thing when I first noticed them, now I just sort of pass them by when in any place that carries them. Ill find out whats available next time im at one of the places that caries them.
I remember reading announcements about this new technonlogy and how its drawbacks were that it was expensive and created a lot of waste. I thought the idea was shelved (which any sane person would do) but it looks like someone in Japan at least thought it was a good idea. -_-
Same here, I last heard the idea was shelved because environmentalists were raising hell because of the waste issues involved. Was one of the few times I agreed with the tree huggers.
You're 100% right there ! More waste and cost too much. Pointless idea. The packing is really cheap too. Just a card sleeve. Yakumo
I could see this happening at rental stores, because I for one never rent anymore because I don't give a crap enough to return the stupid things on time. So if they were just disposable (and you could recycle them) I could go for it.
I know Disney wants to do that for the movies that are in rental stores so as to prevent illegal copying of the discs without having to buy one.
How can that prevent copying of the disc? All you have to do is rip it before the 48 hours is up, and voila. They've not munged the data or anything, since it plays in standard DVD players. It takes what, 45 minutes to rip and decrypt a DVD on a slow drive? From there, you've got VOBs that you can do with as you want.
I never thought they'd actually carry through with that idea. I've never seen those discs over here, and I've heard about the whole divx thing but never actually seen any players/discs.
Self Bombing 48h DVD-R would be great make your friends a nice present: hey, i burned you the brand new robbie williams dvd! oh great i'll watch it the day after tomorrow. great
Ah, the lovely divx format. Thankfully I didn't know one person that actually bought into this lost before it got started concept. A few gifs from the good old days. :smt082 ^_^_^
What do you do with the DVD then? you put it in garbage? WOW, that's perfect for polution. make the format way more expensive too. Dumbest.Idea.Ever.
We had a few years ago VHS tapes that could only be watched 2 times, and then it would be a blank VHS also pretty neat. but once again useless.
