If the chips verify okay, the programming worked. But you need to check the config bits (watchdog disabled, internal oscillator, dunno about the other 2) and definitely! make sure the oscal value isn't overwritten. If you read back a chip and oscal is 0000 or ffff, the internal oscillator will not work properly.
Edit: If this is using the USB method, then consoles after about GH-010 or so need the "resistor" removed. (The resistor is a ferrite bead.)

    About adding a timer:
A simple timer won't work on the PS2. There's many situations where you want the chip to restart, such as a reset, disk swap, internal read error that requires a re-detection of the disc.

I noticed that on my consoles, the attached chip makes no difference at all to jitter or c1 / c2 error rate, so that's good to know.

@Apexseal It would be great if you could test replacing all the letters in the SCEX string with just A, I or E! So for Europe, make it send just EEEE and see if it works :)

I have it that way, all "A" in my case boots first try. I'm using TL866 usb programmer, it does not overwrite OSCCAL it only programs up to "3FE". Gonna build a board with a socket to test them all with same components. I am not using resistor or led. Ferrite part is not removed on my model 30001 V4 (GH-010) I wonder...

Guys I see that wdt, mclre say "off" in the asm but my programmer has them checked... Is that ok? It also has fosc0 and fosc1 checked

Okay. If just sending the same ASCII letter works, we can write a really simple mod.
It would work on the tiniest of microcontrollers :p

Only 3 chips out of 8 work. Geez for the life of me I can't figure out what's wrong, they all verify just fine. I did notice some have BG1 selected, Some BG0 and some none of the two. So far the 3 that work have BG1 checked (the option seems read only on the TL866 software). The PS2 seems as if it was gonna take the game but it goes to the browser screen then the Red Screen.

Maybe I just got ripped off with some bad chips or chinese duds. Maybe is because they have been sitting there for about 5 years LOL.

I'm gonna try the "bad" chips on a psx that I have with a socket fitted (used to use it to test 508's back then). If they work there then I'll be even more stumped! LOL

one way or another the day is close by. if it works on my slim it will give the notivation to fix my fat 50004. its laser cant read anything. but my fat has freehdboot same as freemcboot but is instaled on hdd instead of mc. and i play my ps2 games from hdd. so with this method i will have a complete set.

I've been playing with one the faulty chips by changing the delays in line "step2 movlw 17 ;17 x 50ms = 850ms". I have gotten it to work a few times (before it did not work once). Could it be that the OSCCAL values are messed up straigh from the vendor? I remember I got these chips from a china vendor. I will have some free time next weekend so I'll build the OSCCAL restore board and give it a try. Nothing to lose and gain some experience. It is not the first time I buy chips from china and come out bad. These are cheap so no big deal but a while back they were some expensive Spansion BGA 64's about 70 out of 150 were duds and I do those with a Superpro 5000e. I know I did not mess up the OSCCAL since the TL866 that I use for these pics does not allow writes to that address.
