Well its on the wild as already on sale, get it?:icon_bigg Bad joke, anyway, thanks to a spy photo (some dude wandering around with a cellphone, actually) the "elite" 80GB PS3 (new model number 98004) is a reality and may be released soon. My take? sony is a cheapstake: MS releases a 120GB disk and they release an 80GB one? I dont like it...
their HDD provider maybe switched production ? just a guess, because 20GB extra are nothing to brag about as a selling point in this day and age. I m very shocked that consoles are so rapidly updated within one generation in such a short time after launch (mainly referring to the PS3). Makes me recall one of Krazy Ken's statements before the launch of the PS2, saying that he wished to upgrade their console on a rate comperable to that of computers (or something along those lines)
If you look at how much Sony pay to make the PS3 compared to how much you pay for it, they aren't cheapskates. At least Sony allow you to put any hard drive you want in there. Microsoft don't own thunder stealing, that was after all what the xbox 360 elite was about. smf
ehm, lately you state what i have already said in other topics like in that one concerning the snes cd-rom.... it's just by chance, right?
clever men reach the same clever conclusions, the magic that's called rational thinking I guess I wouldn't have a reason to post anyone else's opinions as my own, because then i couldn't find arguments to back them up:lol:
My guess is that the internal chipset is the same as the Euro edition and the 80GB drive is a sweetener.
That would sound about right. Whats the betting that the 60gb models suddenly become very desirable and more expensive then the 80gb models?
Wait to see how much they charge you for the 80GB, then we talk about whos the cheapstake in this industry...
Sony are no doubt well aware that their poor performance in the marketplace is largely the result of a high price point. I doubt they're prepared to exacerbate this by pricing a unit with negligible benefits to the end consumer even higher. I'm with Taucias, this is a (cost-effective) panacea for lowered BC.
Yup, I'm in agreement with the BC theory, just makes me glad I got my US version when I did, 20Gb extra is hardly a great sweetner though and I don't think this alone will turn Sony's fortunes around.
In that case I only see two possible outcomes: 1-That the 60GB unit becomes the new lowend SKU at $499 and the 80GB will go for $599, or... 2-The 80GB SKU is just a replacement of the 60GB one, and will become the only PS3 at $599. In the first case theres the risk that most people will go for the 60GB SKU since the spec difference between the two is almost negligible while the price difference is kinda relevant. I thake option 2, but I wouldnt discard the possibility of the 80GB version being a LE with a higher price point.
I think Barc0de is right. The HDD provider probably stopped the production of 20GB HDD's. Still, does anyone care about the PS3 these days? MGS4, FFXIII and GT5 are so distant.
Well the price difference between a 60gb and 80gb 2.5" SATA hard drive at a wholesale level is neglible (seriously it's a few quid). Not even Sony would be greedy enought to try and add a massive premium between a 60gb and 80gb model. Without looking stupid. Even with a small difference there doesn't seem to be an incentive to buy the 60gb model and I can't see Sony being stupid enough to say 'Hey the 60gb machine has Hardware backward compatability but this funky new 80gb machine does it in Software'. I still feel that the 80gb machine will be the machine they use to sweeten the fact the machine lacks the hardware to play PS2 and PS1 games properly. Not even Sony are going to be that much of an utter [censored] to Europe to charge them more for less for any period of time.
the ps3 has been one mistake after the other so far. their marketing division needs to come up with voodoo tricks to turn the tables. there has already been a great market segmentation in the backwards compatibility arena of the ps3 - that's bad for a company's credibility in the console world , one remembers examples such as the 32X not fitting as it should etc.
I don't see how this could be a bad thing (unless they try charging a lot more for the 80GB model, which they won't). If Sony gave you a free pack of beer with the console you guys would complain it wasn't cold enough. Sheesh.
Here is what I am curious about: When will I be able to upgrade my 20 gig with a new hard drive? The ones that come in the PS3 are smaller then normal ones.
