I just got another fat PS2. It was reading games poorly, so I took it apart and cleaned it. After putting it back together, it doesn't read games anymore at all. To be more precise it just doesn't spin up the disk. On the PS2 browser it just says reading disc infinetly. So I know that the laser is still good. Could I have blown the fuse, because of static electricity? It's a SCPH 30004R with the awful HD7 laser. Oh and when you start the console it spins the disc 4 times and then stops.
And yes I checked the ribbon cables, so that's not the problem.
    Any suggestions?

I'd say try another DVD drive.Possible that the drive you have right now is dead.

    Also,is your 30004R a v4R or a v5/6/6R?

    I think it's a V6.
Oh and I just tried disconnecting the small ribbon cable, from the motor. It's exactly the same, the disc want's to spin up, but can't. So i'm guessing the motor is dead.
I did look on ebay and the parts were only available for the slim models. So I'm gonna put FMCB on it and sell it with a broken disc drive. That's a shame, because it has a decent modchip in it.
    Oh well.

If it's a v6,then replace the drive with one from a v7-v10. Be warned though, the replacement drive must have the same laser as the current one (in your case,a HD7)

The best drives Sony made were on early GH-018 v7 machines.

Is it because the drive key has to match the console and the different lasers have a different key? Sorry I'm no expert at PS2 stuff, I'm just saying this because I know that something similiar happens with the Xbox 360.

There's no key on the drive lol.

PS2 motherboards came in 2 versions : R-type motherboards which use HD7 lasers and A/B/C-type motherboards which use KHS-400A/B/C lasers.

You cannot install a Sony KHS-400A/B/C laser in a R-type motherboard and viceversa because it's incompatible.

So here's how it should be:

R-type motherboards - Sanyo SF-HD7 (open face version works best, the closed face version is damn crappy even though it's built the same as the open face version)
    A/B/C-type motherboards - Sony KHS-400A/B/C (400A is for v1-v3,400b and 400C are for v4-v10)

So,long story short, find a old v7 DVD drive with a SF-HD7 laser and use it to replace your v6R's DVD drive.

The laser does not depend on the type of Mainboard, unless it is a "v5" and below. My GH-022 (v8) has a SF-HD7 fitted.

For boards after the v5, the laser type can be configured in software. Sony has their own tools for that, but we have lenschanger.

    I'm not really sure of that.My GH-018 v7 has a SF-HD7 too,but when I tried installing the 400C,it didn't read anything,even though a older v4 35004 could run it without a problem.
On this v7,not even after running lenschanger the 400C didn't work. And yes,the laser is in good shape.

If you have any ideas what could it be I'm here to listen.Forgot to say,the same has also happened on a SF-HD7 v10 too.

@l_Oliveira is the better person to ask about this.

I believe that the R-type patch only determines which type of laser that the MECHACON will deal with, but the drive calibration data would not be suitable. If that is right, then the drive has to be recalibrated as well for the new laser to work well. But don't take my word here as the truth, as I am not a console repair specialist. Neither have I explored into this region much.

I'll try doing a video so people can see what's the problem.
I'll include the results with SF-HD7 and with KHS-400C.

A video like that would be really helpful. It's not that easy to find stuff like this about the PS2. I think it was actually much more easy several years ago.

I just got a PS2 30003R with the KHS 400R. It doesn't read discs, but it actually spins them. Could I put the disc drive itself in my other PS2, but replace the KHS 400R with the HD7? Thanks for your help

Good news ! I managed to fix the new PS2 with the KHS 400R. It just needed a lens clean and some grease on the rails. As a temporary solution I used olive oil, because I had no grease laying around. ( Don't judge me, it works).
Anyway, could I just take the motherboard from my old 30004R and put it in in this PS2 and connect the DVD drive to it? I only want to do that because, the other PS2 motherboard already has a modchip.

You mean installing the 30004R motherboard on the 30003R?
Yes,that's also possible and easy. Just switch the boards and test. Oh,and watch out for the power/eject ribbon cables.

My v7's power/eject board just happened to die because the ribbon cable weakened so hard, the pins on it didn't make good contact and shorted out the board.

Now it's sitting "half dead" because I don't have a replacement power board and getting one from eBay or anything like that would cost more than the board itself.

I changed the motherboard and everything is working ! But I am seeing something very unusual. There is no animation anymore when the PS2 is sitting at the select screen. It's just static.

    I've had that happen too.
    Don't worry,it doesn't do anything bad to your PS2.

Have you tried setting the time and date?
