but, i remember about 10 years ago, when japan already had some 3Mb/s and me at home in swiss was glad about my 512Kb/s, which was the greatest at that time.

Of course actual speeds vary greatly...especially if you're downloading stuff from the west. My max bandwidth from a torrent was just under 2 MegaBytes a second. Basically a gig transfer in 5-6 minutes. Thankfully I don't live in the UK. Also note I was just upgraded less than 2 weeks ago.

And yes, Japan, was indeed the last. The fact that people live on top of each other allows for cheaper upgrades to the architecture. American speeds are still around 3Mb for fuck's sake.

Yeah it's rediculous. As for AOL Time Warner, the top tier service will end up costing $75 USD, for 60 gb a month, and $2 each GB over the limit - granted this is just a rumor, but still remember that as of now it's $45 for unlimited cable usage. Theres no reason to put usage caps except that it makes them more money (same reason you pay for text messaging.)

The good news is that there's already legislation being drafted to prevent this very thing, although seeing how the Isps will probably bomblast congress with lobbyists don't expect too much.

So if you don't want this to happen, get behind NY congressman Eric Massa email your own to support him.

Sounds like you just have a terrible ISP to be honest.

I have 100 mbit/s, and I don't live in Tokyo, I live in a tiny village in Sweden. With 100 km to the closest large city. We have fibre in all of Sweden, and that's an area the size of Texas, but with a very low population.

japan and sweden are probably the most highend countries when it comes to speedy internet connections. and quite cheap as well (as for japan. may be for sweden as well).

What the hell? I have 20 Mbps, and the biggest thing you can get there withouth going bankrupt is 50 Mbps!

    Woah.

But, IIRC in a couple years we will be able to get 100 Mbps for an affordable price. Still, with 1 Mbps I'd have enough.

Do we really have this still in effect here in the UK? I know it was a big problem in the old AOL dial-up days, but I thought with the introduction of high speed braodband (Especially within the last couple of years) this was made obsolete. Which providers is it with? BT? Sky? As far as I was aware, my Virgin cable broadband is unlimited. I thought that was a major selling point for their service? - If not, then they're not really clear on what we are actually getting, and how much we would be charged (Or cut off) if we go over it

To be perfectly honest though, it's not something that really affects the majority of users. The only people it does affect are those who are constantly streaming torrents and downloading hundreds and thousands of mp3's, which generally isn't your average user, but more likely to be teens downloading pirated music or films which they shouldn't be. It only becomes a problem when yu're actually downloading legitimate stuff in abundance and require the extra limits

Download limits and restrictions seem to be something which is kept quite quiet though by many companies. It's something everybody should know about their service, but very few people actually do. I generally assumed that I had unlimited, but to be perfectly honest I don't even have a clue what speed i'm getting at the moment (Because they keep changing it!), let alone whether or not there are restrictions on downloads - Everybody's seems to be different and unique, and I was previously paying £25 per month for 10meg, but now it's all changed again so I have no idea what service i'm receiving

I use Bethere at the moment, no limits or hidden charges. It really just depends who you use. Virgin cap your service for a few hours if you download more than few GB over a short period of time (eg, if your on 20mb you'll be capped at 5mb).

You know I beg to differ, as more people use sites to stream video like youtube and google video, or play games online, listen to music, etc. it can be real easy to go over the pathetic 1 gb limit.

I motive I see here is money, plain and simple. Why give something away for free when they can rip your heart beating out of your chest... I mean sell it instead?

    It's bullshit.

Haha...two months ago here in greece we had the greatest service of a 2mbps if you live outside of Athens!
Now finally we have 24mbps at most which actually works about 13mbps!!
    Thankfully we have no caps...
I think we are the most lowend country!!

I'm not quite sure what to think about this. I mean, it should be obvious enough that there's no such thing as truly "unlimited" anything in this world. At some point your ISP is paying the Bandwidth Fairy (or whoever, I dunno) for a fixed amount of bandwidth that they have to divide up among all their customers somehow. Is a cap the best way to make sure everyone gets their fair slice of the pie? I have no idea.

Random stat: if I maxed out my 5Mbps internet connection 24 hours a day for a month, that would be about 1600GB.

Some Good News (for us Time Warner customers,) looks like they're putting this rediculous heart ripping eye gouging rip off plan... I mean their tiered internet plan on hold:

    http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-lazarus17-2009apr17,0,7958552.column

See, things can happen if people get up off thier butts and do something about it.

Yeah well, honestly this is not my problem. My problem is getting the best internet service I can for the cheapest price. If the compnay I go to can't do that then I'll go somewhere else. Really why should your ISP be any different than any other company you do business with? We shouldn't treat them with kid gloves becasue thier business is "hard." Yeah well things are tough all over. I mean if they're worried about the strain on thier networks, then why are they not investing in creating networks that can handle it (like say, Verizon is?) It just sounds like B.S. to me.

How much data do you think it takes to play online games like TF2 for instance? I always wondered if that had any affect on our 10 gig a month limit, but I'm not sure how much it would be if there even was one.

In my stupid student housing, I have a whopping 512kbit/s download speed, with a 10gb cap. Granted, its figured into our housing costs, but it's making me want to kill myself.
